One of the largest misconceptions about
assessments is that they are given only at
the end of a lesson or subject, once the
teaching and learning is over, instead of
seeing assessment as central to the learning process in whole. Assessments provide
the student with much-needed feedback.
Feedback is necessary information
about how one is doing, toward a goal;
information about what and what wasn't
accomplished toward that goal. Feedback
isn't necessarily time-intensive one-on-one
instruction or guidance from the educator.
Beautifully designed instruction incorporates assessments naturally throughout
the curriculum to provide the student with
many points to self-check, freeing up the
educator to provide personal feedback,
coaching and guidance when necessary. It
is often said that feedback is the breakfast
of champions. Feedback makes the lesson
more meaningful and that meaningfulness
is what makes learning stick (or last longer). Pivot Point's educational content follows a four-phased system of teaching and
learning that maximizes the opportunities
to learn new content using self-directed
learning objects throughout.
If you don't have the luxury to teach using
content that fully incorporates assessments
tailored to guide students using productive feedback, there are a number of things
you can do to incorporate these stopping
points within your lesson plans to develop
an effective feedback loop.
Formative assessments are widely used
tools that provide feedback while the learning is taking place. It is very likely that
you remember an educator coaching you
to improve certain skills or make slight
adjustments to achieve a higher score the
next time. This personal feedback helps
learners build confidence and gain from the
assessment process. Not only do formative
assessments measure student progress, they
too can measure your effectiveness as an
educator. For example, say you implement
a new group activity for a particular lesson,
you can measure the level of engagement
through observation. Or, you can simply
survey your students, to determine whether
or not the activity was effective in helping them deepen their understanding of
the lesson.
Place various formative assessments
within the lesson plan at natural stopping
points. These will provide students with
feedback, whether self-obtained or educator-led. The assessments are designed
to gauge the level of the students' performance and help guide improvement along
their journey within the lesson, without the

formality of a grade. Examples of formative assessments are:
* Puzzles and games
* Group polls
* Mind-mapping activities
* Simple three-to-five question quizzes
* Q&A sessions, both informal and formal
* Role-playing scenarios
* In-class activities where students informally present their findings
* Reflection journals
* Student-assessed rubrics
Summative assessments take place once
the learning has been completed. These

assessments provide information and
feedback that sums up the entire learning process. Summative assessments are
more outcome-based and assess the final
product. A great example of this would
be to develop and/or use an educator-led
performance rubric. In a performance
rubric, each skill task is rated by levels of
quality (from bad to good) or by development (from beginner to mastery) and is
presented in procedural order to complete
the skill. Rubrics are not only a great tool
used for summative assessment, but also
for formative, student self-assessment.
