Nailing It! Beauty Schools Aim to Bring New Life to Nail Tech Programs BY GAIL SHORT B eauty school owners around the country say salons and spas are scrambling to hire their nail technology graduates. The increased call for nail technicians is due in part to the rise of the celebrity manicurist and the growing popularity of nail art, which in recent years has been showing up on social media sites like Pinterest and on the fingertips of superstar entertainers and runway models. In fact, money spent on nail services in the United States has grown to $8.54 billion, according to NAILS magazine's 2014 Big Book. That is up from $6.2 billion in 2010. And the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics reports that manicurists and pedicurists can expect to see an employment growth of 15.6 percent by 2022. To meet the demand for nail technicians, many beauty schools are reestablishing or reconfiguring their nail programs to turn out candidates licensed to work in salons and spas. The trend, however, is in stark contrast to a few years ago. As late as 2013, AACS reported in Nails magazine that many beauty school owners were closing their nail programs due to shrinking enrollment. Deborah Dunn, the owner and president of the Lancaster School of Cosmetology and Therapeutic Bodywork in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, was one of them. She says she shut down her school's nail program back in 2005. "We had stopped our nail technology program completely for several years because we just hadn't seen enough of an interest."
