RECRUITMENT, HIRING

AND RETENTION

The best recruitment tool is word of
mouth, recommendations from others
and, on occasion, talking to strangers
you meet randomly.
All of Port Coquirtlam (PoCo)
Building Supplies' current
management staff came from a
casual word or meeting that resulted
in us making a job offer.
Dustin Phillips, Store Manager,
started in the yard 27 years ago on
a recommendation from one of our
drivers who watched him grow up as
a neighbour. Greg Graham, CFO, came
as a chance conversation with a vendor
and Jake Revill, Marketing Manager,
met Co-owner Chris Galer at a party.
Our receiver, a cashier and most of
the floor staff have all come from the
recommendation of another employee.
We have also hired experienced people
that came to us looking for a change
from their current workplace.
I have a conversation with the local
shop teachers every year that we
would be interested in talking to any
of their motivated graduating students
who have no plans for the next year.
We have tried newspaper
advertisements, putting up job
postings at British Columbia Institute
of Technology and listing jobs online
on Workopolis and Craigslist with
very limited results - often there's no
response at all.
We have plastered our trucks with
"Now Hiring" decals and with little
response, and have placed a "Now
Hiring" sign at our entry gate, which
does bring in applicants. We have not
yet hired an employment agency to
help recruit staff, though we would
consider doing that in the future, as
qualified applicants are very hard to
find in our current business cycle.
This is not a normal practice for us, as
we find that quite often the skills and
training that are offered at the big

Recruitment

box operations are not compatible
with the skill sets we require for a
more contractor-oriented clientele.
Above all, word of mouth
has worked best in recruiting
qualified employees.

Hiring
Our hiring process generally starts
when we receive a resume or when
an applicant walks. We'll interview
them and, if qualified, follow up with a
more involved interview that includes
the potential employee's supervisor.
After that, we review the character
of the applicant and assess whether
their skill sets and personality would
fit with our PoCo culture.
Other than some of our junior
weekend staff, all positions are full
time with a 40-hour, 5-day work week
and no split shifts or split days off.
We have a budget for each position
and a salary range for more or less
experience of the new employee.
After a 90-day probationary period,
our benefits package kicks in.

Retention
PoCo Building Supplies benefits
from being in the Galer Family since
1921, officially registered for 98 years,
though we suspect R.C. Galer may

have been operating the business for
a few years before the company was
actually registered.
With four generations of the Galer
family owning and operating the
business, there is a great sense of
stability and of staff ownership, which
helps add stability to the workforce.
Staff feel like they are part of the
family and not just an entry on some
corporation's books that gets sent a
paycheque every two weeks.
We have several staff members
that have been with us for more than
40 years, who are not yet 60, so we
feel that we can retain staff when we
get the right fit.
A good retention strategy is to
have a fair wage policy, a good
benefits package and recognition
that the thoughts, ideas and efforts
of the employees will contribute to
the success of the company. We also
meet and plan career paths with the
newer younger employees and offer
all employees growth opportunities
within the company when there
are openings.
Our owners and managers have an
open-door policy and encourage all
staff to take advantage of popping
in to discuss what is on their mind -
work, family or simply social visits.
