OVERCOMING A TUMULTUOUS
START TO THE YEAR

I

would have preferred to talk about all the new and exciting things happening at the
BSIA, but wow! What a tumultuous and eventful start to this year! The COVID-19
pandemic has affected many travel plans, redirected international flights and resulted
in the installation of extra screening at Canadian transit points. Major sporting events
and music festivals have been cancelled, and programs in schools and universities have
been postponed.
At the same time, cooperative international efforts have begun on the initial human
trials to develop a vaccine. We are encouraged after seeing a reduction of new cases in
the initial outbreak areas. I have to expect that we will overcome this initial setback and
by the time this article is published, we may be seeing a downturn and move back toward
normal business practices.
As we emerge from all this initial turmoil, it may be a good time to review your existing
health care plans for your businesses and protect your employees with additional
coverage. It may also be a good time to check your commercial insurance to carry
additional business disruptions insurance. Please contact our BSIA Affinity partners for
more information.
The BSIA AGM was held in late February. We said goodbye to a couple of retiring Brads:
Brad McCluskie (Coast Distributors) and Brad Dixon (Castle Group). We appreciate their
efforts and participation on the BSIA Board and chairing their Committee groups. We
also welcomed three new board members: Mike Sauder (Metrie) Kevin Staller (Coast
Distributors) and Jarrett Flaig (Lumberworld).
BSIA received additional government funding for the BSWD certification program.
Last year, the BSIA successfully placed 78% of the graduates from BSWD, an accelerated
certification program developed to train people for entry-level positions in our building
supplies industry. Our program is now offered remotely for all individuals who enrolled
and started April 20, 2020.
First aid and health and safety training will be offered at the BSIA Surrey offices
monthly this year.
I am pleased to announce that the BSIA will now be offering online training courses
through the Northwest Skills Institute, designed to reach all our BSIA members, thereby
limiting expenses for travel.
The Mystery Shoppers (MS) Program is underway for 2020. Many of our retail members
have found the MS report a useful tool to help improve their businesses. The 2019 Orion
Award Finalists were announced earlier this year. The winners have been announced on
page 8 of this magazine. Due to the current health crisis, Regional Finalist Tours, with
the board and affinity partners have been postponed as we follow the recommended
procedures by our provincial and federal government health officials. When possible, we
encourage individuals to participate in upcoming events.
Meanwhile, stay healthy and stay connected everyone. I look forward to meeting
everyone at the next BSIA event.
