EXPECT
RESPECT

sn't it a given that everyone should expect respect? Then why do organizations spend considerable
time and resources ensuring everyone is aware of the importance of a respectful workplace? There
is a belief that if organizations don't pay attention and do their due diligence, they can't be assured
that everyone - including employees, contractors, volunteers and customers - is on the same page
regarding what a respectful workplace looks like.

As a business owner, one can't
assume that everyone is aligned
with what is and is not considered
respectful behaviour. Furthermore,
in the course of one's work one can,
unfortunately, get caught up in the
moment and behave inappropriately
at times. The consequences of bad
behaviour are significant in terms
of a company's brand, effect on the
team, loss of resources and potential
financial implications. All it takes
is one employee who believes they
were hurt, bullied or abused because
they were treated, in their opinion,
badly by their manager, a colleague
or customer. If this employee files
a claim and posts on social media
that they were bullied or harassed
it could bring into question the
company's reputation. Who wants
to work for an organization where
there could be the presence of bad
behaviour? Once this employee files
a complaint with occupational health
and safety, the company is now under
audit and investigation, which could
significantly impact team morale,

trust within the organization and
the allocation of resources required
to disprove the claim. Whether we
disprove the allegation or not, the
damage is done - you can't undo the
negative impact of a claim alleging
harassment or bullying.
So what is an organization to do
to protect itself against a potential
harassment or bullying claim? There
are a few action items that are an
absolute must for any organization:
* Develop policies on code of
conduct, respectful workplace,
health and safety and harassment
and violence. Hold manager and
employee workshops where
the policies are discussed and
questions are asked and answered.
Engage managers in scenarios
where they participate in problem
solving around potential situations
that may come up in the workplace
and that could be in violation
of the policies. Ensure you have
everyone sign off that they have
taken the training and have had
an opportunity to discuss and

ask questions regarding the
policies - it is a requirement that
business owners demonstrate they
have properly trained their workers.
Ensure you have a process for
employees to follow in the event
they experience and/or witness
harassment, bullying or violence in
the workplace. Develop an incident
reporting form and ensure that
everyone knows how to access,
submit and process it.
Consider offering employees an
independent third-party resource
to speak with in the event internal
reporting processes are deficient
or unavailable - for example,
employees can't go to the
owner because the owner is the
perceived problem.
Make certain that your corporate
values are linked to and support a
respectful workplace, and ensure
all your managers "walk the
talk," demonstrating behaviours
consistent with your values.
If you see inappropriate behaviour,
address it in the moment. Ask
