Social Networking
and Participation

M

any of us at the BSIA office have just returned from our golf
tournament at Bear Mountain in Victoria, which took place before
the cooler autumn weather settled in around us. The tournament
was well attended and gave us all an opportunity to network with suppliers
and dealers to build relationships for future business.
Reflecting on this past year, the most rewarding thing for me was the
opportunity to network with many of our members; we discussed their
concerns, sought out alternatives and helped fulfill their requirements.
These concerns are not always product based. They may relate to
staffing issues, education and retraining courses, or even healthcare and
commercial insurance requirements.
Everyone in sales knows that to get a sale on a product is simple - just
lower pricing. However, to maintain a program year after year and to
retain a customer, social networking between individuals is important
to determine quality and distribution requirements as well. Customers
tend to purchase from people they know and trust. Face-to-face
meetings at networking events are even more important these days, in an
electronic age, when price comparisons are done with a simple click on
our smartphones.
Networking opportunities can be found at all BSIA events. Aside from
the golf tournaments, other networking events include Night at the Races,
Breakfast, Slo-pitch tournament, Bowling Night, Pumpkin Patch and Skate
with Santa. Additionally, the Orion Regional Finalist Tours following the
golf tournaments gives the opportunity for BSIA board members and our
Affinity Partners to tour dealer facilities and speak with store managers
and department supervisors, many of whom do not have time to golf.
Aside from networking, the BSIA membership has placed a high
importance on education, to retrain and retain existing staff. There is an
extensive course offering available: from MS Office Excel to Yard Foreman
to social media. There is a Vancouver Island fund set up to assist with
membership travel to course locations. We are also looking at future online
education programs and to set up other regional training locations.
New this year, with the assistance of government funding, the BSIA has
developed a Building Supply Warehousing and Distribution certification
program, to train and develop persons for entry-level positions. We have
successfully put 35 applicants through three extensive six-week courses,
and have placed many into vacant positions with our BSIA members'
facilities. Presently, there is a waiting list for our BSWD graduates.
Since this is the last magazine issue of the year, I would like to wish
everyone a safe and happy upcoming holiday season. With all the new
and developing programs at the BSIA, I hope you will be encouraged
to participate in our planning committees. I look forward to meeting
everyone at the BSIA events.
