NEW INNOVATIONS AND TRENDS
s the new 2020 BSIA Look & Learn, a virtual conference focusing on education
and professional development, has come and gone, it is a good time to reflect
on the many innovative ways we now conduct business in our building supply
industry, adapting to the current and ongoing pandemic restrictions. The means of
communication, networking and information sharing between businesses has certainly
changed greatly. Zoom video conferencing and online media sharing are now the new
normal for many as we increasingly work remotely and network without travel and
face-to-face meetings to reduce risks of COVID-19 exposure.
Since March, the beginning of the pandemic in B.C., our building supply businesses
have gone through ups and downs, dealing with the risk of exposure and implementing
new health and safety measures. The building materials supply industry was declared an
essential service, providing us with a surge in business, much better than anyone would
have expected. Many attribute the rise in business to limited travel and spending savings
on home improvement projects.
Three years ago, the BSIA, along with other building supply associations across
Canada, formed the Building Materials Council of Canada (BMCC). The intention of the
BMCC is to advocate and provide a coordinated united national voice to the government
regarding our building materials industry concerns. We are advocating for a return of the
Home Renovation Tax Credit to help reboot the economy next year.
Recent BSIA membership surveys confirm the need to fill job openings and the
desire to retain existing employees by retraining them and upgrading their skills level.
Educational courses offered range from Microsoft Excel, Sales and Marketing and
Estimating to Yard Foreman certification. Many of these courses are now offered online,
saving participants from additional travel expenses and limiting their risks of exposure in
these uncertain times.
Our Building Supply and Warehouse Distribution (BSWD) certification program was
a great success last year, training newly recruited applicants and placing 70% of the
graduates into positions in BSIA members' businesses and the building material supply
industry. Government funding has been approved for the online BSWD certification
program, opening up potential to attract applicants in new locations.
Keeping with the trend of online programs and events, the BSIA will continue to
promote events such as the Look & Learn Conference, offer educational programs online
and host Zoom networking happy hour events. At some point in the near future, we are
sure to move back to a new normal where we can once again meet face to face and travel
freely with minimal risk to our health and safety. We will also have our golf tournaments
and our product networking and information events. At such time, the BSIA will have an
improved online presence as well.
Check out our improved interactive website and our new membership benefits wheel.
See you all at our next virtual event.
