A BETTER WAY
TO MEET FLOOR
FLATNESS
REQUIREMENTS!

R

ejecting the slab causes nothing but trouble for all
involved in construction. The missing piece of the sub-floor
preparation puzzle is section 03-54-16 - Hydraulic Cement
Underlayment, and its timely application. When the
NFCA Floor Covering Reference Manual is included in
a projects specification, the provision of a flat sub-floor that meets
product manufacturers warranty requirements (3/16" over 10' for hard
surface floors) falls into the General Contractors (GC) Scope of Work.
If the flooring contractor is asked by the GC to bring the sub-floor
up to 3/16" over 10', it's a billable extra. In the case photographed,
the construction team planned ahead to have Division 3 (Concrete),
leave their pour rough, and 1/2" shy of finished (sub-floor) height.
Four months later the crew in this image poured the 1/2" topping (after
concrete drying, shrinkage and curl) and a few months before the
floor covering was scheduled. The result was flatness that measured
1/16" over 10 feet, even up to support columns, no arguments about
extras, and a flooring installation that began on time. Watch the video:
