CRITERIA FOR CHOOSING A
FLOORCOVERING SUPPLIER

A

S WE BEGIN THE NEW YEAR, IT PAYS TO
REVIEW OUR SUPPLIERS AS A MATTER
OF PRACTICALITY. WE ALL KNOW MOST
OF THE LONG TERM SUPPLIERS TO
OUR INDUSTRY BUT CHANGES LOOM
FREQUENTLY. IN OTHER CASES,
THIS MIGHT BE USEFUL TO NEW
CONTRACTORS AND RETAILERS.
We should create a series of filters to qualify or even requalify suppliers at all levels, wholesaler and manufacturer. The
most obvious is familiarity with the supplier by the purchaser and that may not require further scrutiny.
In any case, here are a number of considerations to make:

1
2
3

Reliability - do they deliver as specified and as
promised? Are you ever left with a feeling that you
can't trust the answers you get?
Accountability - as we all know that product
is not always perfect, does the supplier quickly
acknowledge this and deal with it. Real claims
should be dealt with quickly and fairly.
Stability - has the supplier been around for a good
period of time.
a) Do they have low turnover of staff? A constant
stream of new people may mean you are doing
the training or working harder to gain service.
b) Are they financially secured? This can really
impede any project you are working on.

5
6

Supportive of our industry and associations -
does the supplier contribute to the industry through
membership in BCFCA or the NFCA as examples.
This usually shows the commitment the supply
group has to the health and wellbeing of the
flooring business.
Ethical - are your suppliers upstanding corporate
citizens who abide by the standards of our industry
and even go beyond? Upon examination are your
suppliers generally free of legal battles?
References - talk to your friends and even
competitors in the industry. This can give you great
insights into the quality of the supplier.

CONCRETE PLACEMENT

C

oncrete placement... Avoid over Power Troweling newly
poured concrete surfaces. This process can cause a
number of problems for the Construction Manager
when it's time to install floor coverings. Too much Power
Troweling tightens (densifies) the concrete surface
preventing the escape of moisture and slowing the
concrete dry time. Overly dense surfaces also prevent
flooring adhesives from bonding properly. Flooring adhesives require
surface porosity to achieve an acceptable bond. An overly smooth surface
can force the need for expensive Shot Blasting to open up the surface.
Save money by planning a Concrete Surface Profile of 1 to 2 with a porosity
according to ASTM F3191 (water droplet test). Test for moisture using the
RH, In-Situ Probe Test according to ASTM F-2170 and not the Anhydrous
Calcium Chloride.
