FINANCIAL WELLNESS:
THIS TIME IT'S PERSONAL
Welcome to the BSIA's first in a series of articles about retirement planning for
your employees.
There is no need to tell you there is a shortage of workforce talent in Canada
and all organizations need to act now to ensure they have the right people
resources to successfully run their future businesses. Just like having a quality
group insurance program it is imperative to consider a retirement program to
attract and retain good employees. Not having an employee retirement savings
program places your organization at a disadvantage when employees consider
the best long-term choice of employers.
The BSIA has developed a Group Registered Retirement Program that companies like yours can contribute to an employee retirement program to assist
with their financial planning goals. Desjardins has been selected as the provider
because of the educational training for employees available, low investment
management fees and quality investment options.
Please enjoy the article below provided by Desjardins that addresses the importance of considering this type of retirement savings vehicle for your employees.

R

etirement. It's a notion fraught with
paradox. For some it resonates with
the possibility of finally having more
time to do ... well, just about anything. For
others, it triggers concern about whether they
will have enough saved to retire comfortably
and securely. And still for others, it can induce
a kind of investment anxiety paralysis with
the resignation of "I'll never have enough.
Why bother?"
As government policies have shifted to align
with changing demographics and economic
realities, the result has been a push toward citizens to take greater responsibility for funding
their retirement.
And yet, in spite of the breadth of financial literacy programs, employees continually encounter competing financial priorities
and temptations that disengage them from
approaching retirement readiness with a longterm vision. It's no wonder the recent Willis
Towers Watson Staying@Work survey1 noted
that employees ranked concerns about their
personal financial situation sixth on a list
of stressors.
The same study noted employers ranked
them ninth. This disconnect can affect
the bottom line for employers as a significant portion of employees use work time
to tend to financial issues or become so
stressed they take sick days or extended
stress-related absences.

JULY/AUGUST 2017 BSIA NEWS

There needs to be a paradigm shift that
moves the long-held focus from retirement
saving and financial literacy to financial
wellness as a personal lifetime journey. This
means recognizing there is no "cookie-cutter"
solution and adopting personalized solutions
that address the evolving reality of each plan
member. Just as a personalized exercise routine
developed with expertise and ongoing support
can lead someone toward optimal, long-term
health, Desjardins Insurance believes that
offering employees a personalized financial
wellness program can help them save, budget
and manage debt better. It's about learning
new good habit.
Employers will reap the rewards in ways
that go beyond mitigating stress in their
employees: they will be able to attract and
retain the best employees. The American
2016 Defined Contribution Survey2 determined that "more than three-quarters of
employees say they would choose to join a
company that offered financial health benefits over one that didn't. Eighty-one percent
would be less likely to leave a company that
was helping them improve their financial
standing." They added, "Eighty-seven percent
of Millennials say their companies should
play a role in helping them prepare for their
financial future." Or, to look at it from a
bottom-line perspective: employers who provide more robust and personalized financial

wellness programs to their employees, can
get a stronger return on their investment by
attracting and retaining less stressed out and
more productive employees.
Desjardins has set a standard of putting
each client at the heart of what we do and how
we do it. We are responding to the challenges
of today and look forward to collaborating
with the Building Supply Industry Association
of BC (BSIA) and to share our innovative
and effective approaches that make financial
wellness a truly personalized and successful experience.
Everyone has situations and demands
unique to their lives. With Desjardins Group
Retirement and Savings, we can help the
members of the BSIA empower plan members in ways that are meaningful to them; it's
how we can work together toward financial
peace of mind for employers and employees.
