BUILDING SUPPLY INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION - November/December 2018 - 6

MESSAGE FROM

JAY SECORD

BSIA CHAIRPERSON

A

fter a summer full of hot, sunny
weather and forest fires, the
fall rain came in much earlier
than anticipated. We had the wettest
September that I can remember,
although that didn't dampen the
spirits at our South Vancouver Island
Golf Tournament at Bear Mountain.
September 20 was our last golf
tournament of the season, but certainly
not our last event of the year. There are
two family-friendly BSIA events coming
every fall and winter. October 18 was
our pumpkin patch event at Port Kells
Nursery in Surrey and our Skate with
Santa event is on December 1 at the
Langley Events Centre. Speaking of
events, fall is a good time for employee
training as well. October and November
were filled with some great training
opportunities held at the BSIA office.
While we understand the challenges of
allowing staff to take time away from the
office or the store, it is imperative that
retailers, vendors and manufacturers
alike support our local events to
share knowledge, ideas and develop

networking partnerships. We know most
companies are managing their staff at lower
levels than ever before, and we also know
that it is challenging to find, attract and
retain people. Now, more than ever, is the
best time to invest in employee training and
their engagement with other like-minded
people within our industry by expanding
opportunities in both educational and social
programs. We have to continue to look
beyond today and invest in our people for
tomorrow. The building supply industry is a
very valuable contributor to the provincial
and national economy. Collectively, across
Canada, it represents over 60,000 jobs
and 5,000 member companies, and we
contribute about $40 billion in sales to the
national economy. Let's keep it going strong.
Thank you for taking the time to read this
article and I look forward to seeing you at
one of our upcoming events this fall.
