Canadian Dam Association Bulletin - Winter 2018 - 26

T

he Canadian Dam Association
hosted an excellent conference in Kelowna, BC with
fast-paced workshops, a varied technical program, and technical tours.
Delegates had an opportunity each
morning to learn from engaging
speakers who provided insights
into changes in western Canadian
hydrology, thoughts about the economics of dams, an overview of
Ducks Unlimited water structures
and innovative ideas about the risk
framework for dams in Canada. We
welcomed approximately 422 delegates, the exhibitor event was sold out
and we received generous Pinnacle
sponsorship from the BC Ministry
of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource
Operations and Rural Development,
and Platinum sponsorship from
Hydro Component Systems and
Worthington Products Ltd.

Kelowna 2017
The planning committee members
from all over British Columbia did
a terrific job preparing a conference
that welcomed technical perspectives
and ideas for a variety of dams, from
large hydropower facilities, to tailings dams, to small irrigation and
potable water storage dams. The conference was planned and attended by
dam owners, regulators, researchers,
and consultants.
All of the Workshops and Technical
tours were near capacity, and starting
on the Saturday before the conference
included workshops covering the dam
safety review technical bulletin, tailings dam breach work, stability analysis for mining dams, APEGBC site
characterization of dam foundations,
dam safety for small dam owners, and
emergency management and response.
In addition, there were working group
forums covering dam design/construction and environmental consequences.
Everyone was invited to a night out
at the BNA public house on Saturday
night and a classical string trio provided music on Sunday night while a
fun evening of networking unfolded.
On Monday, the technical sessions
were in full swing and the exhibitors'
reception evening was spent in and
outside with live music from a cool
jazz duo. The young professionals
were very active with a technical presentation at lunch on Monday and a
night out together. Volunteers worked
hard to help companions find their
way around Kelowna and wine and
farm tours were offered.

Tuesday saw a continuation of
terrific technical presentations and
updates from committees - ICOLD,
regulatory and mining, and the
Annual General Meeting. Attendees at
the annual awards banquet on Tuesday
night enjoyed music by the Screen
Doors, while networking and conversations continued into the night.
The names of the recipients for the
2017 CDA Awards are provided on

The success of the conference each
year is a large part due to the commitment of volunteers and the involvement of sponsors and exhibitors. CDA
would like to thank all of these companies for their support!
See you in Quebec in 2018!
