CDA Young Professionals
KELOWNA 2017 CDA
CONFERENCE YP
TECHNICAL PRESENTATION
Dr. Proskin, a senior geotechnical
engineer with Thurber Engineering,
presented to a group of 30 young professionals a talk about countering
uncertainty in dam engineering -
the role of geotechnical instrumentation. The presentation highlighted
the use of geotechnical instrumentation coupled with the observational
method to provide an economic
solution to designing and building
earthfill structures. Dr. Proskin
highlighted a case study that was
completed where earthfill was used
to simulate the load of a large tank.
Instrumentation was installed before
the earthfill load was applied and
then design parameters of the foundation were back calculated using the
instrumentation data after the load
was applied. The presentation was
engaging and there was good discussion around the use of the observational method in practice.

KELOWNA 2017 CDA
CONFERENCE YP SOCIAL EVENT
Cori Creba, Jessica Steeves, Jamie
Saunders and Jenna Simzer organized
the social event for the young members
that was held on October 16 during
the 2017 CDA conference. An evening of networking, tasty local food,
games and prizes was enjoyed by over
40 people at the local brewery - Tree
Brewing. We received overwhelming
response from attendees interested
in getting involved with the Young
Professionals Committee. Special
thanks to FortisBC for sponsoring this
successful event.

INTERNATIONAL YP UPDATE
Leila Ouahit, a CDA Young
Professional (YP) attended to the
ICOLD 2017 Congress in Prague.
Among the main advantages of
attending that conference, the following should be highlighted:
* Meet YP's from other countries, and
gain an understanding of country
specific issues;

* Compare, and Evaluate Canadian
Practices with International
Practices;
* Improve Canadian Engineering
Practices and Design Approach; and
* Understand other YP National
Committees Initiatives.
During the ICOLD 2017 Event in
Prague, Leila was elected on the
ICOLD Young Professionals Board,
along with members from the US,
Norway, Russia, Mozambique, UK,
and Croatia.
The vision of this board is to reinvigorate ICOLD by encouraging and mentoring the younger generation. Main
objectives and mission:
* Create a network to encourage the
attendance and involvement of YP's
at the ICOLD Meetings;
* Provide an opportunity for knowledge transfer, for YP's to connect
and share experiences;
* Inspire YP's to become active in
their National Committee; and
* Provide a forum where country
strategies around attraction, encouragement, development and support
of YP's can be shared.
Up-coming activities:
* Formalization of an International
Network for YP's (Addition of
Italia, Argentina, Morocco, France,
Angola);
* Development of an Information
Exchange Platform to share national
practice for YP involvement;
* Development of a Webinar
Program, for technical knowledge transfer (geographical, and
inter-generational);
* Development of Technical Program
specifically addressed to YP's during ICOLD events; and
* Pursue the development of a mentoring program.
We are looking for volunteers to
support the planning and implementation of the Quebec 2018 and Ottawa
2019 YP conference events! If you are
interested, or for general inquiries
please contact us: young.professionals@cda.ca.
