reputation as someone who is always
willing to get involved.

CDA CORPORATE MEMBER
AWARD - HYDRO-QUÉBEC
Each year, the CDA recognizes member organizations who have distinguished themselves within the dam
community. For 2018, the award was
presented to Hydro-Québec.
Since its contribution as a founding member of the Canadian National
Committee on Large Dams (CANCOLD)
in 1960, Hydro-Québec has continued
to promote the advancement of knowledge about dams and dam safety.
Hydro-Québec regularly and actively
contributes to several CDA committees
and has been actively involved in the
development of the Technical Bulletin
on Dam Safety Reviews. It also has
active members on several technical
committees of ICOLD.
Highlighted by work at the La
Romaine Complex, Hydro-Québec
has introduced new methods and
technologies or adapted international
approaches - such as asphalt-core
dams - for use in North America.

PUBLISHED PAPER
This award is presented to the
author(s) of the most outstanding paper

presented by a member in the previous year. All members who present or
publish a technical paper are eligible
for this award.
The winners are Paul Knox,
Andrew Cornett, Mitchel Provan, John
Menniger, Rick Lux and Syed Abbas
for their paper from the 2017 conference titled Assessment of Debris
Issues Impacting Design of a Flood
Diversion Project in a Large Scale
Physical Model.
The paper evaluated the transport
and deposition of debris and its impact
on the effectiveness of the design for
the Springbank Off-Stream Storage
Project. A 1:16 scale physical model
was developed which proved a very
useful tool for evaluating the movement of debris and performance of the
flood control structures.

POSTER COMPETITION
This year in Quebec City, the
Organizing Committee strongly
encouraged young professionals and
students to enter a poster competition.
The first prize was awarded to
Alexandra Tremblay-Bouchard for
her poster Assessment of the internal erosion potential in earth core
rockfill dam (ECRD) with a till core.
The second-place prize was awarded

to Maxime Bolduc for his poster
Évaluation d'un ouvrage hydraulique
affecté par la réaction alcalis-granulats
à l'aide d'un modèle d'éléments finis
non linéaire multi-physique (Evaluation
of a Hydraulic Structure Affected by
the Alkali-aggregate Reaction Using
a Multi-physical Nonlinear Finite
Element Model).

CDA SCHOLARSHIPS
The CDA offers two scholarships
annually to full-time postgraduate
students attending a Canadian university or college whose program of
study focuses on dam safety and/or
the management of dams.
The Gary Salmon Memorial
Scholarship, valued at $5000 is
awarded to the top applicant, and the
CDA Research Scholarship of $2500 is
awarded to the runner-up. Candidates
are evaluated on the relevance of their
research work and the potential for the
advancement of knowledge, leadership
and community involvement, and academic excellence.
The Gary Salmon Memorial
Scholarship recipient, Haley Schafer
of the University of Alberta and
CDA Research Scholarship winner
Fatoumata Maïga of the University
of Ottawa were acknowledged at the
2018 Award Gala. Their work was
described in the Fall 2018 issue of the
CDA Bulletin magazine.
Congratulations to all our winners.■
