The explosions caused about 30 cm of heave at the ground surface, geysers from the surface, a temporary rise in the groundwater level and water flow from the drill holes for 30 minutes after which the ground surface subsided. Push samples from test pits excavated before (adjacent to the test area) and after (in the test area) the explosions indicated that the average degree of compaction in the upper 15 m increased from about 25% to 50% (Brown 1940). Prior to construction of the dam, the soil under the dam footprint was modified using explosives. 3.8 The Design of the Dam A typical cross-section of the dam is shown on Figure 5. 5 THE 1982 GAZA EARTHQUAKE AND THE RESPONSE OF THE DAM The Gaza earthquake occurred in south-central New Hampshire on January 18, 1982. The event had a body wave magnitude (MbLg) of 4.5 and a focal depth of 4.5 to 8 km (Chang 1983, 1987). The epicentral distance of the Franklin Falls Dam from this event was 8 km and significant ground movements were recorded in the dam's seismographs. No damage or deformation was observed on the dam following the Gaza earthquake (Chang, 1983). These values are indicative of appreciable amplification between level ground (the downstream instrument location) and the crest and right abutment. Such amplification between level ground and the crest of embankment dams is typical (Makdisi & Seed, 1977; Sigaran-Loria & Hack, 2006). The principal characteristics of the recorded ground motions are summarized in Table 3. The Arias intensity is a measure of the energy content of a ground motion per unit mass of soil and provides an indication of the potential for deformation or damage (Kayen & Mitchell, 1994). The transverse directions of the seismographs are perpendicular to the axis of the dam and therefore most important with respect to the seismic behavior of the structure. Chang (1987) found the natural period of the dam in the transverse direction to be 0.45 s. The measured transverse ground motions and corresponding spectral acceleration diagrams for 5% damping from the downstream and crest seismographs are presented on Figure 6. The ground motions are characterized by high frequencies typical of east coast events and the duration of significant shaking (>0.05g) is about 1 second. The spectral diagrams are indicative of stronger responses for structures of relatively low periods, 0.1 to 0.2 s. At periods above 0.6 s, the spectral accelerations are close to zero. 6 PRELIMINARY DECONVOLUTION ANALYSIS The objective of the deconvolution analysis was to develop an 27
