earthquake ground motion on bedrock at the location of the downstream seismograph that is capable of generating a ground motion at the surface that is reasonably similar to the measured ground motion. The resulting ground motion on bedrock could then be used in the dynamic numerical analysis of the dam or added to the database of east coast ground motions on hard rock for the analysis of other dams in similar seismic environments. The methodology typically used in deconvolution analysis is fairly straight forward; a measured surface ground motion is applied to the top of a model of known subsurface conditions (overburden and bedrock) and the resulting accelerations on bedrock is recorded as an "inside" or bedrock ground motion (Mejia & Dawson 2006). The generated bedrock ground motion can be verified by using it in the model to generate the surface ground motion and comparing the measured and generated surface ground motions. The instruments on the crest and abutment were undoubtedly influenced by the responses of the dam and the topography, respectively (Makdisi & Seed 1977; Sigaran-Loria & Hack 2006). The downstream instrument was affected by the underlying overburden. However, there is no specific information on subsurface conditions in the area of the downstream instrument. The challenge here was to conduct a deconvolution analysis in the absence of specific information on subsurface conditions. The methodology of the deconvolution analysis was as follows. 1. Estimation of subsurface conditions in the area of the downstream accelerometer. 2. Deconvolution analysis of the transverse ground motion record of the downstream accelerometer consisting of: a) Performance of site response analysis using the transverse record from the surface to generate a ground motion on bedrock. b) Performance of site response analysis using the generated bedrock ground motion to generate a ground motion at the surface. c) Comparison of the generated ground motion at the surface to the measured ground motion at the surface. If the ground motions are not sufficiently similar revise the subsurface conditions and return to step 2a. If the ground motions are sufficiently similar, continue to step 3. 3. Performance of site response analysis using the longitudinal record of the downstream accelerometer and comparison of the generated and the measured longitudinal ground motion records at the surface. 6.1 Initially Assumed Subsurface Conditions The downstream accelerometer is located 295 m from the centerline of the dam (Haley & Aldrich 2010). This places it about 128 m from the toe of the rockfill terrace.
