WORKSHOP F - FORUM ON IMPROVEMENTS TO THE CDA ENVIRONMENTAL CONSEQUENCE CLASSIFICATION SCHEME (1/2 DAY) Assessment of environmental consequence classification of mining dams is an important aspect as it often informs the design criteria for a mining dam. CDA has recently formed a working group for improving the guidance for classification of mining dams based on incremental environmental losses that is currently in the 2007 CDA Dam Safety Guidelines. As part of the guidance development, the working group will be hosting a half-day workshop to discuss and develop plans for this important initiative. The group will present a pan-Canadian view of regulation, terminology, and classification systems for environmental assessment and classification that mining dams currently follow. Other international mining jurisdiction classification systems will also be presented. Participants will be invited to share their experiences and concerns in classifying mining dams with respect to environmental consequences in an open forum-style discussion. The discussion will also cover other the possible decoupling of environmental and cultural consequences. KEYNOTE SPEAKER Monday, Oct. 17, 2016 8:30 am BRYAN WATTS RECENT TRENDS IN SAFETY ASSESSMENTS FOR TAILINGS DAMS Bryan D. Watts, P.Eng is a Principal of Klohn Crippen Berger in Vancouver.  He graduated from University of British Columbia in 1974 and obtained his MSc in Civil Engineering in 1980 from the University of Alberta. He has designed tailings dams and evaluated their safety in Canada and many other countries around the world.  Among his many accomplishments, Mr. Watts was lead consultant for the resolution of the Bennett Dam sinkhole event in 1996/1997. He has been heavily involved in the  forensic studies to determine the cause of failure of: Omai tailings dam in Discover our end-to-end hydropower solutions At the John Hart generating station, our experts teamed up with BC Hydro to design, build, finance, and maintain the new 132 MW facility for 15 years, continuing to provide environmentally friendly energy in British Columbia, Canada. YOUNG PROFESSIONALS TECHNICAL PRESENTATION ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING Monday, October 17, 2016 4:30 pm TECHNICAL TOURS Tour #1 - Annapolis Tidal Plant The Annapolis Tidal Plant is a unique generating station, as it uses the highest tides in the world to generate energy. It is a one-way tidal barrage that generates electricity during falling (ebb) tide, during the discharge from the headpond into the sea. During the rising tide period, sea water is sluiced in the upstream direction into the reservoir. The scope of the technical tour includes a visit to the upper machine floor, where information on the machine and seals will be provided. A review of the governor system, cathodic protection system and chlorine generator system will also take place. The tour continues to the bottom floor of the Tidal Plant, where guests will see the horizontal generator up close, along with a view of the linkages and wicket gates. Next, the tour will take guests through the control room for the facility. The tour finishes in the Interpretative Center, where guests will have an opportunity to ask questions. Following the technical tour, the group will be stopping at a local winery for lunch and an optional wine tasting. Tour #2 - St. Margaret's Bay Hydro System The St. Margaret's Bay Hydro System is located on the outskirts of Halifax.  This 90-year-old hydro facility has recently undergone many changes, including new overflow spillways and upgraded dam structures. This half-day technical tour would bring delegates to see the structures and tour one of the plants. Following the tour, delegates will travel to the scenic Peggy's Cove, where there will be time View past issues of the CDA Bulletin 27/05/16 5:06 PMonline at www.naylornetwork.com/cda-NXT/ http://www.snclavalin.com/en/ http://www.snclavalin.com http://www.naylornetwork.com/cda-NXT/
