frequent floods. The final elevation of the sill to be determined during detailed design. The objective of the hybrid option is to be able to discharge up to a 100 year event and maintain a normal operating level of 19.5m in the reservoir. For flood events with lower frequency, surcharging of the reservoir will be used for attenuation. Where there is an overflow weir spillway, the section is a conventional gravity structure with ogee crest shape, similar to Location C. Where the spillway is a gated section, the section may be a thin slab design where the piers form buttresses that allow the structure to be stabilized at bedrock level and the spillway formed by reinforced concrete. With a gated system, conveyance will be along a sloping surface, but otherwise Canadian Dam Association * Fall 2016 will plunge over the gated structure. Energy dissipation will be by friction and turbulence in the rock fill, which will be sized to resist erosion from the discharge water. Stability of the structure is modelled using rigid body mechanics and all concepts achieve stability with gravity. Full hydrostatic uplift is assumed at the upstream heal even though the section is assumed to be filed with sediment. During normal operation, tail water is determined taking into account backwater effects from Lake Major Road Bridge. The governing load condition for extreme load is erosion of the rock fill ballast during the IDF. A preliminary analysis determined the structure meets stability criteria during normal load conditions by a significant margin. SLUICEWAY At all locations, one (1) low level sluiceway is installed at bed level, elevation 16.4m at location F and 17.0m at Location C. The sluiceway has three (3) purposes: 1. Emergency lowering of the reservoir if there is a dam safety incident 2. Riparian flow capacity at low reservoir stages 3. Provision of attraction water for the fishway, if needed. The sluice will have a concrete sill bottom and consist of a stainless steel or aluminum vertical slide gate mounted on the upstream face of the concrete. The gate can be raised or lowered on a vertical shaft actuated at the dam crest. The gate can be operated either manually, or remotely. 23
