Figure 12 shows the maximum principal stresses in concrete substructure. As shown in this figure, the results of FEA indicate that the tensile stress in concrete exceed the concrete tensile strength in some areas. However, this model does not include any rebar or anchor bars. Figure 13 shows the deformed shape in vertical direction of stay vanes and speed rings. As indicated before the offset between the top and bottom speed rings in the horizontal direction is used to calibrate the FE model. Therefore, the results of FEA for the deflections are expected to match the existing condition. Furthermore, the results of FEA show that the stay vanes will be compressed in the vertical direction which is in agreement with the actual stay vane residual stress measurements. In order to determine the load capacity of the stay vanes, a post-buckling (push-over) FEA was performed for a single stay vane under displacement in the vertical direction. Also, the nonlinear properties of the construction materials were considered. See Figure 14 and Figure 15 for the model of single stay vane and the results of Eigenvalue Buckling Prediction, respectively. As shown in Figure 16 the results of the push-over analysis indicated that the stay vane will collapse under vertical displacement of 3.35 mm and the capacity of single stay vane under buckling condition is 14000 kN (248 MPa). 8 DISCUSSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS * The residual stresses in the stay vanes measured by X-ray diffraction method, runner clearance data and instrumentation readings were found to be in agreement with the results of the FE analyses. [x1.E9] [x1.26] 12 Force 8 4 0 -0.025 -0.020 -0.015 -0.010 Displacement -0.10 0.05 0.00 Figure 16: Post buckling analysis (push-over): Force (N) -Displacement response (m) 36 * The value of the strain that is used in the analysis is in agreement with the value that was used in similar studies. * The results of the model verification and FEA are very similar to the existing condition which indicates that the FE model assumptions (such as boundary conditions, loading, material properties...etc) are reliable, valid and relatively accurate. * The model of the top and bottom speed rings is a simplified model as the actual geometry was not modelled due to the complicated shape of the rings. Therefore, the deformation of the speed rings may not represent the exact existing condition. * The actual shape of the top and bottom speed rings may deform plastically at the stay vanes. This will result in a reduction in the total deformation of the stay vanes as part of the vertical force/deformation may be dissipated due to the shape of the speed rings. * It is recommended to take out of plumbness measurements for the stay vanes. This will give a better idea about the total offset for the stay vanes as the offset readings indicated in this report are taken for the units. * The FEM does not include the anchor bars or concrete reinforcements which may have an effect on the results. * Concrete growth rate and strain indicated in this report are measured along the dam cross section.
