considering the interdependencies with Dams 10, 11 and
12 mentioned in Figure 1.
Figure 6 shows the same results as Figure 5, with
additional information coming from social acceptability
(Morgan, 1990, Whitman, 1984). In this figure, the domino
effect from Dam 7 as well as Dams 6, 8, 11 and 15 are shown
well below societal acceptable risk, shown as a continuous
straight line. However, they remain above corporate tolerance and they constitute the largest corporate potential
losses in the portfolio.
It can be observed that Dam 3 is below the corporate
risk tolerance curve, but above marginally accepted social
acceptability; this constitutes a societal overexposure.
Dam 13 is above corporate tolerance, but below societal
threshold. Dams 9 and 12 are above both corporate and
social thresholds. Dams 9, 12 and 13 represent intolerable
risks to some degree, and they will be discussed in the
next paragraph.
The final task is the creation of a clear road map for future
improvements. Figure 7 shows the intolerable part of the
risk of each Dam. The risks that demand primary attention
were clearly identified in the previous paragraph. Dams 9
and 12 represents 99% of the intolerable risks for the whole
portfolio of dams. These are the priorities.

on the cost for their improvement, they could be brought
into the tolerable realm; Dam 13 is the closest to this
threshold. Failure of Dam 7a by itself represents a tolerable risk. However, failure of Dam 7b is intolerable,

As shown earlier, it is possible to determine quantitative
probabilities of failure of tailings dams using a variety of
