C+C ❭❭ PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Work Hard,
But Don't
Forget to
Have Fun

❭❭

Welcome to the launch of C+C, MPI Chicago's new printed magazine. We are so excited to go old school
and bring a tangible item to your mailbox. With today's technology changing the way we do business,
we wanted to get back to our roots and give you something to keep on your desk as a reminder that
your chapter is working hard for you: our members. Keep it handy or pass it on to a friend.
We will bring information to you that is relevant to Chicago and our industry. Our goal is to help you
stay current with our evolving industry. We also want to share things from a global perspective that
have an impact on you. If you ever feel hungry to learn about something new or to learn more about a
topic that has peaked your interest, feel free to send me a note.
Our chapter is in the midst of redefining how we meet and engage as members. Over the past
few years, we have been working to bring a satisfying and inspiring experience to you. We know
that you can spend your time with any industry association, and you have chosen MPI. For that,
we are grateful. Our chapter is strong because of members like you, and we are dedicated to
ensuring your time is optimized.
Speaking of redefining and becoming more strategic, let's talk about Chicago's 2016 championship
baseball team. The Cubs did an amazing job over the past few years, and it has been so exciting to
witness all of the great things they have accomplished. I am not talking about winning the World
Series, though that was pretty amazing. I am talking about how they truly rebuilt themselves from
the ground up. As I serve you in my leadership role this year, I have tried to follow the example set
forth by Joe Maddon with the Cubs.
As president, I had the honor to share a presentation with the Board of Directors, the chairs of
committees and our engaged members who are in leadership roles for our chapter. The presentation
talked about how the Cubs really do believe in the philosophy of putting in an honest day's work
while keeping it fun. If you think about it, there were quite a few times where you would see social
media posts of the players having a good time and enjoying their work. They wore the silly suits that
everyone loved heading out to a long road trip. Joe knew it would be a long haul, so why not keep the
spirit light. He also has been quoted often talking about his young team and how he wasn't putting
pressure on them. I love the quote, "Try not to suck." I know that isn't PC - though Joe's message is:
Try hard, though not so much that you overwhelm yourself with perfection. He wanted his players
to take their time, find their stride and do the work to be successful. The entire front office was
methodical in their planning and was thoughtful in every step they took to rebuild their franchise.
The results are astounding. My wish and goal as president, and the goal of the entire Board of
Directors, is to yield great results for our members while having fun in the process.
Enjoy this issue and please reach out to me personally and let me know if there is anything I can do to
help enrich your engagement with the MPI Chicago Area Chapter.
At your service,
TINA REEDY
