BIRD MANAGEMENT: BEST STRATEGIES AND BIGGEST CHALLENGES By Eric Paulsen, Clark Pest Control Like every other aspect of our industry, bird control has both changed and developed over the years, while at the heart keeping to the roots of our industry, maintaining our goals of protecting people, property and food, and building upon our original strategies such as exclusion. Also like every other aspect of our industry, cultural norms and more stringent regulatory standards have significantly changed how we practice bird management. While there are many different ways to break down strategies for bird control, long-term strategies for bird management are typically identified as falling into one of following categories: deterrents and repellants, exclusion and habit modification, shooting and trapping, and lastly toxicants. Deterrents and repellants are among the oldest of our strategies, and within this category one of the oldest strategies is the scarecrow. While scarecrows might make us think of Ray Bolger's portrayal of the scarecrow in "The Wizard of Oz," we continue to see variations of the scarecrow strategy very much active today in urban bird management in the form of predator bird mimics, motion-sensor-activated spiders and even less obvious examples such as colorful reflective strips tied to fences and plant rows. Sound The use of predator bird mimics is a fairly broad area in and of itself. While many will first think of static plastic owls, which pigeons quickly learn make a nice perch, there are active predator bird technologies including wind activated and battery activated motion birds that remain on rooftop (or other) locations, to active predator-bird-kites. Another predator bird mimic technology is to use www.pcoc.org / Winter 2015 10 recordings of predator calls. While acoustical repellants include predator calls, far more common acoustical repellants are recordings of distressed birds, bird bangers and pyrotechnic charges, all of which can be practical in many agricultural settings, but are typically not welcome (or in some cases perhaps not legal) technologies to use in urban settings. Bird Spikes One of the most commonly used deterrent/ repellants is the wide variety of bird spikes and similar technologies used in common roosting locations such as roof and window ledges, roof peaks, lights and similar architectural features. The advantage of bird spikes is that they are relatively inexpensive and http://www.pcoc.org
