what we're bringing to market is to be able to
❱ "Inusethethemeantime,
legacy engines" (instead of genset systems), particularly
since "a lot of the larger railroads are finding the need for way more
horsepower than they ever needed in the past for switching, and
these genset systems are lacking in power."
"I think the future is exciting," says Feiler. "There are 18 LNG
facilities coming in the U.S., so at some point the price structure
will change, and in the interim these regional fleets can still
benefit through natural-gas conversions, with LNG right out of
the plant [mainly in coastal areas], and CNG used in the mid-area
of the country. This offers the emission benefit coupled with the
flexible fuel; so, for example, if you're running an LNG tender, you
can switch over to diesel and still maintain 100 per cent output."
Ultimately, "there are three drivers," says Engenious
Engineering President & CEO Ian Bradbury. "Fuel flexibility (which
may be a stronger driver in some other markets like emergency
backup power generation), economics and environmental
concerns. These could be a regulated driver, a situation with
associated incentives, or just good citizenship."
In hindsight, says Perry, "kudos to CN for running their test. They
did something really innovative, and they proved it works. Now it's
just a case of setting up the right economic framework." ■
