Facilitating a Critical Thinking Discussion
By James S. DeLizia, CAE
he Association Laboratory each year publishes an environmental scan
whitepaper for associations called "Looking Forward." The scan tracks the
most common concerns of the memberships of the responding associations, as
well as implications for how associations must respond.
What was the number one concern
of association members in both the
2014 and 2015 studies? "Managing the
volume of information they receive."
Number two? "Evaluating which
sources of information are most
relevant or useful." In fact, three of the
top five concerns all had something
to do with information management.
And, as you would suspect, the number
one implication for associations:
"Meeting members' expectations for
convenient information delivery,"
followed closely by "customizing
content for different audiences."
With members on information
overload, the association's ability to
collect, filter and analyze data is an
essential service, and perhaps the
greatest opportunity associations
have to stay relevant. In like kind, the
ability to facilitate discussions that
help your leaders make sense of 'data'
and move to a sound 'decision' is an
essential skill and can ramp up your
value as an association professional.
The Critical Thinking Process
Critical thinking is a process that can
help a group move from data to decision,
and has application in a wide range of
group situations, including planning,
problem solving, and strategic issue
deliberation. The process has four basic
steps, with a core question or two that can
guide discussion at each step.
