MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Kristine Van Winkle, CMP, CASE, CTE Senior Account Executive, Marriott International How long have you been with your current organization and/or in your current position? I've been with Marriott International for a little over 26 years - managing a variety of market segments from corporate, association, affinity, social, sports and entertainment. The last 3+ years have been in my current position as Sr. Account Executive managing the association segment where I have wonderful clients that are all based in Northern California. How did you hear about associations as a career choice? What brought you to your current organization? Back in the day there was a TV show called "Hotel," and oh boy I was sure that's what I wanted to do. Actress Connie Sellecca played the role of Christine Francis, a manager at the St. Gregory Hotel in San Francisco, and she SOLD me the idea of hotel management. So the TV show, coupled with an internship at a hotel in Sacramento while attending UC Davis, was the start of my career in the hotel industry. What's your hometown? Where were you raised? Born and raised in Quincy, CA, I was surrounded by the beauty and bounty of the National Forest. Growing up I have great memories of camping, fishing, tennis, golf and general enjoyment of the outdoors with my Mom, Dad and brothers. What do you do to relax? Hobbies? My Dad always said that tennis and golf were the social sports for life, and he was right! Over the years I've gravitated more to golf, and have had wonderful opportunities for playing both sports with friends, family and even clients. Some of my best memories are early morning rounds with my husband Steve. What's your favorite type of food? Raised on the teachings of my mom and Julia Child (a real thrill to have met Julia back in the early 90s), I learned early on to appreciate the offerings and comforts of bringing food together in a way that warms the heart and soul of those around you. So I don't really have a favorite food, I'm more about the pure joy of food in its simplest form or in a state of culinary artistry surrounded by family and friends that excites me the most. Do you speak any languages besides English? Sadly, what I learned of Spanish in high school and one year of college is mostly forgotten! Do you have any kids? Pets? Two great kids, who are not so much kids anymore - Robert is 27, living and thriving in Sacramento and Katelyn turned 20 in August is attending CalPoly San Luis Obispo. Quincy, our Golden Retriever, is a little over a year old and full on going through her teenage years testing the patience of my husband and I on a daily basis. We love all our kids! What was the last movie you saw in the theatre and loved? "Jurassic World" - almost as good as the first one and all I can say is WOW! What's your favorite guilty pleasure? One of the simplest questions to answer: ICE CREAM! If you could meet any famous person or historical figure, who would it be and what would you ask/tell him/her? I would have loved to have met the classic comedians like Don Rickles (still amongst the living), Foster Brooks, Sid Caesar, Dom DeLuise and Joan Rivers. I would have loved to have hung out with Robin Williams for a day. And I wouldn't ask any of them a thing; I'd just listen and laugh until it hurt! Then there's the Rat Pack; the thrill of Frank's voice and the dreamy Dean Martin. Sing to me boys! What's your favorite quote? Next to my computer, I read this quote every day and take pause to embrace it: "Ability is what you are capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it." -Lou Holtz INDEX TO ADVERTISERS CAREER CENTERS Boxwood ........................................................ 11 FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS Bank of Sacramento ...................................... 23 CONVENTION & VISITORS BUREAUS Redding Convention & Visitors Bureau .......... 29 Sacramento CVB....................Inside Back Cover HOTELS & RESORTS The Domain Hotel ..................Inside Front Cover Embassy Suites - Sacramento Riverfront ........ 4 Four Points by Sheraton LAX .........Inside Front Cover EVENT PLANNING Naylor Event Solutions ........
