Show the Way?
s a facilitator and speaker, I work with executive teams to help guide positive
transformational change in organizations. Major shifts are not necessary
every year, but when they are needed, that shift requires a new mindset of
vision and a willingness to challenge traditional actions in order to adapt
and succeed.
Part of the process of change involves overcoming resistance.
Resistance is an instinctive human response from discomfort with
uncertainty associated with change. The following questions are
examples of uncertainty that stem from change: Who will be my boss? What will happen
to my job? I might not like my new work? For some, it is momentary discomfort with
uncertainty, as they quickly transfer anxiety to excitement for new possibilities and
opportunities. For others, there is severe stress from uncertainty that distracts the mind
with fear and worry and can disrupt the body with illness.
Strategies as a leader for reducing uncertainty include inviting inclusion in discussions
to feel heard and valued, sharing more information, and investing time in buy-in efforts.
As a facilitator of change, real-time experiences with association clients and others have
helped me to understand the sequence and process of change and what is required to
successfully lead transformational efforts. An unlikely, yet completely on-target tool, is
found in an ancient tribal wisdom map.
The Pollen Path, a Navajo Sand Drawing as Metaphor for Leading Change
An ancient Navajo sand drawing can be used as a tool to understand the
requirements for leading and successfully moving through change. The Pollen Path
