a foundation to craft a new strategic
plan that will continue to move the
organization forward.
* Leaders are committed to leaving the
organization in better shape for future
generations of members and volunteers.
Subscribing to the Peter Drucker school
of thought, leaders understand that
"continuing what led to past success
will invariably lead to eventual future
failure. We must be willing to abandon
what was formerly successful." Leaders
are always evaluating how they do
business and their programs and
services. CalSAE is no different. Please,
complete those surveys and member
needs assessments. We rely on your
input to guide our thinking.
* Leaders read to learn and learn to
read. As Kevin Kelly explains in his
book, The Inevitable, we are endless
newbies "trying to keep up" with
the accelerating rate of change, new
information, technological advances ...
"no matter the age or experience." We

are in the forever state of "learning."
As leaders, we accept this and
embrace the fact we will always be
students. Leaders make time to read!
* Leadership is about promoting
collaboration-working together
and recognizing the contributions
of everyone. Listening to all the
voices, even those that may differ
in perspective. It is through
collaboration with others that
we build a dynamic, responsive
organization.
* Leadership is about remembering
to say thank you to those who have
inspired, contributed, and made our
organizations and lives a little bit
better through their efforts.
I want to thank three awesome
CalSAE leaders whose terms ended
June 30, 2017, who have made others
better through their continued support
and their unique contributions to
the CalSAE Board of Directors and
various committees: Greg Golik,

CAE, Jo Linder-Crow, PhD, and
Greg Wilson, CAE. Each of you
demonstrates what it means to
be a talented, helpful, caring and
constructive leader. In addition to
these three are many others to whom
we owe thanks. Inspiring leaders
and mentors-those who got the
organization to where we are now
and those who will take us to the next
level. Thank you.
In an organization such as CalSAE,
an organization of leaders, leadership
can be hard to define and may mean
different things to different people.
For me, leadership is about setting
direction, building a shared vision
in service to our members, our
stakeholders, and our constituents. It
is about charting where we need to go
as an organization to be successful ...
it is dynamic, exciting, and sometimes
a bit scary. Leadership is about all of
this, and more-and it's exciting to be
part of this journey!
