more flexible workplace, members who want associations to provide more services and constant communication,
and employees who want flexibility, benefits, and avocado toast. Leadership is tough.
Even though we have more ways to communicate than ever, people are feeling more disconnected. Loneliness
and depression are on the rise. I predict that future organizations will have a new position called the Human
Contact Officer, or HCO. This person will help people understand how to connect with others on a more
personal level and help people communicate to convey and encourage emotional connections and facilitate
important conversations.
1. Listen to discover knowledge
2. Encourage active two-way dialogue
to improve processes
3. Be transparent with employees and
members
4. Make good decisions
that engender trust
5. Communicate those decisions
6. Create and maintain personal
connections that build loyalty

Until they fill those HCO roles,
today's leaders need to help their
employees and members communicate
more effectively, maintain emotional
connections, and coalesce as a team to
help each other succeed.
Effective communication skills
don't happen overnight, and not every
leader knows how to communicate well.
While leaders want respect and trust,
it's their communication and consistent
decision-making that substantiates
their authority.
For leaders to help their teams
communicate better, they need to:

for understanding, and have an open
