EXCELLENCE 2019
COMMUNICATION

Without any financial backing, the group
launched the website and used social media
to amplify the conversation. A press release
was sent, which was picked up by many
local media outlets. In the first two weeks,
the website had 12,000 page views. Tweets
were getting over 18 per cent engagement
and dozens of positive remarks were shared
through the website. The proposal captured
the attention of Mayor Don Iveson. He
proudly shared his support on Twitter and
invited the group to be guests on a Facebook
Live conversation about placemaking.

Iveson. Il a fièrement annoncé son soutien sur
Twitter et a invité le groupe à participer à une
conversation en direct sur Facebook.

This outpouring of support led to the
creation of the non-profit High Level Line
Society, invites to speak with community
groups and stakeholders, a Jane's Walk
along the line and advocacy with municipal
and provincial government. The concept
has started to be embedded in new policies.
Most recently, City Council directed
Administration to explore how to formally
work with High Level Line Society.

d'Edmonton. Plus récemment, le Conseil
municipal a demandé à l'administration
d'examiner comment travailler officiellement
avec la High Level Line Society.

High Level Line: it's real, it just hasn't been
built yet.
"This submission reveals guerilla urbanism at
a new level," the jury said. "The courageous
young professionals saw a disconnect and
decided to jump right in using social media to
share a vision."

High Level Line: c'est réel et il ne reste qu'à la
construire.
« Cette soumission porte l'urbanisme de
guérilla à un niveau supérieur, a dit le jury. Ces
jeunes professionnels courageux ont vu une
déconnexion et ont décidé de se lancer dans
l'utilisation des médias sociaux pour partager
une vision. »

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

High Level Line: World-class linear park concept
quickly gaining attention in Edmonton
A group of Edmontonians are proposing a transformative linear park called
High Level Line that has already garnered the attention of the mayor. The idea
connects Downtown and Old Strathcona, giving new life to underutilized railway
corridors and the upper deck of High Level Bridge.
"It's truly exciting to imagine this linear park as a gathering place
overlooking our breathtaking valley and connecting our city."
-Mayor Don Iveson on High Level Line
It's not just about the bridge. The Line takes 4km of disconnected and
underwhelming spaces in the heart of Edmonton and reimagines them as a
signature line of parks and open spaces designed for the 21st century city.
The hypothetical High Level Line extends from MacEwan University (and
the cycle track on 105 Avenue) all the way to Whyte Avenue at 104 Street.
It utilizes the old Canadian Pacific Railway right-of-way through Strathcona,
Garneau, the North Saskatchewan River valley, Grandin and Oliver.

"High Level Line is uniquely Edmonton. It's a project that reflects the city's
geography, diverse neighbourhoods, and its appetite for fresh ideas."
-Michael Zabinski, Architect, High Level Line
The group of young professionals from architecture, urban planning, landscape
architecture, engineering and marketing has been studying the area and
devising a concept plan for the past year. They are finally taking their idea to
the public to start a city-wide discussion about this opportunity to transform
our city.
They are looking for feedback from the public through High Level Line's website
and social media.
"Wouldn't it be cool if Downtown Edmonton and the Southside were better
connected? If there was a world-class linear park in the centre of our city
for families, students, seniors and tourists? High Level Line concept has a
real city scale to it-that's the appeal."
