03/ ClimateACTION!
A plan for a better
future
COLLEEN MERCER CLARKE + HOPE PARNHAM,
CO-CHAIRS OF THE IFLA WORKING GROUP
ON CLIMATE CHANGE
AT THE INTERNATIONAL FEDERATION OF LANDSCAPE
ARCHITECTURE World Council meetings (Oslo, September 2019)
delegates representing 77 national associations declared a climate and
biodiversity emergency (www.iflaworld.com/newsblog/ifla-declaresa-climate-and-biodiversity-emergency), and with the CSLA acting as
champion, launched the IFLA ClimateACTION! Plan. The ClimateACTION!
plan (bit.ly/2KktYgb) is an ambitious framework that challenges
landscape architects throughout the globe to unite through individual
and collective action to reduce carbon emissions, to enhance the capacity
of nature to serve and shelter and to create communities equipped to
face a changing future.
EVERY BIT COUNTS

IFLA members believe that if we are to be leaders in climate impact
reduction, in building resilience and in supporting transformation,
we must first examine our own behaviour and demonstrate our
commitment through our own actions. The work of landscape architects
can contribute significantly to reductions in global emissions through
our decisions relating to building materials, maintenance methods for
landscapes and removal/planting of trees.
Together with the ASLA, the CSLA, LACF and IFLA are supporters of
the Climate Positive Design Challenge (climatepositivedesign.com). The
Challenge is the brainchild of Pamela Conrad (ASLA California), whose
research in developing a carbon footprint calculator was funded by the
Landscape Architecture Foundation (see Landscapes|Paysages, Spring
2019 issue for more on the calculator).
Launched globally as a key component of the ClimateACTION! plan, the
Challenge is a call to measure that includes open access to the online
Pathfinder software, which will help you better understand the emission
contributions of materials and the effect of alternative options for
design, construction and maintenance in lowering the carbon footprint
of your projects.
LOVE EVERY LEAF

While there is value in conserving energy, in reducing emissions and in
advancing carbon recapture technologies, climate change has refocussed
the global community on the need to value, conserve, protect and
enhance the natural environment that sustains us all. Climate change
is adding to the stress already experienced by ecosystems, species and
habitats throughout the world, including urban canopies, which are so
important to the cultural and sustainable future of human communities.

The ClimateACTION! Plan seeks a redefinition and insightful valuation
of the role played by natural assets. Working with partners such as
the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as well
as like-minded conservation organizations nationally and globally,
landscape architects are encouraged to be the architects for nature, at
home and abroad, affecting our own work, and hopefully influencing the
decisions of others. Initiatives such as the IUCN Nature for All program
believe that personal contact with nature enhances how we value the
contributions made by natural systems to human health, well-being
and prosperity.
ONE TREE/ONE PLANET is an IFLA inspired outreach that encourages
every person to plant and nurture at least one tree. Forest cover
is an important element in the fight against global heating and
for the important contributions to emission reductions and
carbon sequestering.
THERE'S MORE TO THIS THAN RISING WATERS

Landscape architecture sits at the interface between the natural and
the built environment, with special consideration of issues that affect
the prosperity of future economies, the well-being of communities and
sustainability of ecosystems. Our profession should be at the core of
informed risk assessment, innovative planning and design and insightful
leadership for interdisciplinary teams.
IFLA is promoting support for ecosystem-based planning and design
approaches such as Nature-Based Solutions and Low Carbon Resilience,
which seek to engage society in the protection and enhancement of
the ecosystems which have for generations provided needed services
in food, water, security and trade. Through collaborative efforts with
partners such as the IUCN, IFLA will seek out opportunities to promote
innovative approaches to the conservation and enhancement of natural
assets as key components of urban planning and design, and essential
elements for enhanced resilience to severe weather and climate change.
SHARING THE LOAD

IFLA was established in 1948, built on the model of the newly evolving
United Nations. As such, our International Federation depends on the
voluntary participation of its members throughout the world to confirm
our professional standing, to keep us true to our founding principles,
and to share the insights and opinions of its members. With 77 World
Council National Association Members, and a small cadre of volunteers
running the Federation, it can be difficult for individual landscape
architects to see how and where they can fit in the IFLA structure.
IFLA recognizes the value inherent in the work of every landscape
architect. We reach out to you to work with us to advance the plan for
ClimateACTION! to provide us with ideas, experiences, and successes -
and to take on these challenges in your own practice.

CSLA President-Elect Hope Parnham
(hparnham@outlook.com) and Colleen
Mercer Clarke (mercerclarke@bell.net)
Co-Chair the IFLA Working Group on
Climate Change. Colleen also Chairs
the CSLA Committee on Climate
Adaptation and was recently named
as first recipient of the IFLA President's
Award. Read L|P's Spring 2019 issue
for more on climate change and the
activities of this dynamic pair.
