PROLOGUE

LANDSCAPE THROUGH VISUALIZATION

applies a measured and creative mapping
process that reveals hidden aspects of the
site, while rendering a poetic and seductive
levels of representation.
It may be that "de-coding" patterns of the
landscape from above helps us to understand
the landscape by viewing a form not normally
experienced. Aerial images are inherently
appealing because of their information
promise and the challenge and reward of
decoding them. The decoding is an act that
brings to the forefront texture, aesthetics
and identity of the place. Through this
process, the maps begin to uncover aspect of
the site's history, allowing the reader to see
the pieces of the landscape that have been
preserved over time.

THE ACT of visual representation practiced
by landscape architects involves a myriad of
individual choices that are often a product
of habit and familiarity with the tools and
processes that, in turn, are influenced
by viewer expectations and production
efficiency. These choices have a profound
influence on how we see, understand and
represent place. If we accept that how
we visualize a place is a choice and that
choice is influenced by many factors,
then by examining those choices we can
broaden our understanding of how place
can be represented. The map-landscapedrawings (or simply maps) shown here
and in LP+ offer an example of how we
might visually document and understand a
particular place.

It has been over 20 years since MacLean's
and Corner's 1996 publication, Taking
Measures: Across the American Landscape
showcased a collection of aerial photos of
the American landscape (New Haven, CT:
Yale University Press). The photographs
were accompanied by evocative "mapdrawings" crafted by Corner, to visually

There is a reflection on the beauty of
aerial photography and the notion of visual
expression the landscapes from above with
an artistic measure, through digital collage.
The accompanying aerial photographs were
taken by Professor Nathan Perkins from his
gyroplane (C-GNHP), capturing the visual
elegance of farm-lands, forest and fields,
and industrial sites surrounding Guelph that
are rarely seen from the ground. The aerial
photos capture a sense of the poetic beauty
of the landscape of southwestern Ontario
