The voids in a stone, the caves in a hill,
courtyards in architecture, are regarded
as aeration corridors through which Qi
passes and, in fact, exists. Consequently, a
stone needs to be "penetrable"(透) in order
to be considered "artistic."3 Therefore,
Qi is connected to the dual concept of
void and emptiness (空). Both establish in
artworks and landscapes a high degree of
indetermination in meaning and value, so
that a dynamic and imaginative interaction
between the object and subject can be
sustained. Therefore, human imagination
is viewed as a critical part of the process
of artmaking, which is not left to the
artist alone.

In the ancient landscape painting of
"Penglai Island" (Photo 1), the void parts
can be seen in the mist and clouds, as they
give the landscape a vivid quality and a
potentially mystic atmosphere and feeling.
As empty areas in the overall configuration,
the voids invite the eyes to pause, thus
allowing the imagination to invest the
landscape. Lastly, as intermediate fields
between different pictorial areas and
objects, the voids helps to distinguish
between the parts of the painting, each
one acquiring a specific stance relatively to
the others.

Qin (亲)
Qin has many seemingly different but
related meanings, including "intimacy," "to
go near," "to do something by one's self,"
or "close relatives." All these meanings are
related to aesthetic experiences that are
one step above the aesthetic basis of Qi.
Qin as "intimacy" means that the landscape
is experienced through the intimate
interaction with space, things and their
qualities. Only then can one get a full grasp
and reach a higher level of understanding of
the landscape.

Qin also implies that one is to experience the
landscape "by one's self," that is, by being
immersed in what otherwise would remain a
scene to be contemplated from the outside.
One of the highest aesthetic achievements
of paintings is to make the viewer feel as if
he or she is "in the scene" (身临其境). Only
then can an "intimate connection and
wholeness" (亲和) between one and the
depicted landscape be achieved.
In both cases, through Qin, and even in
the case of a painting, the viewer can
experience the landscape, with all senses,
sight, smell, sound, touch and taste, if
only in imagination. To be immersed in the
landscape (photo 3) is to float in a sea of
sensual experiences and to reach a state of
mind, or a mood, where one "forgets about
himself or herself" (忘我).
Through corporeal involvement and
sensual experiences, one becomes closer
and closer to the landscape, as if it was a
"relative" (which is the third meaning of Qin),
a friend, or even a lover. Landscape is thus
personified and, in a way, given a life or its
own, in close proximity to one's existence as
a living being.
