astronomy. With an access point near
the ASTROLab, the Parcours du Soleil, a
three-kilometre trail, offers remarkable
potential for public engagement. Along
the trail, the sky is visible through a series
of openings cut into the forest canopy;
there are also two clearings.

JEAN-FRANÇOIS BÉDARD

BETWEEN EARTH
AND SKY
FOR MOST OF US, the night sky has
very few visible stars. The light produced
by cities and towns creates a veil that
obstructs the view of the stars that
once marked the arrival of night. The
phenomenon means that 80 per cent of
all human beings live under night skies so
bright that most will never see the Milky
Way. Collectively, we are deprived of the
beauty of the night sky, humanity's shared
heritage. It is a crucial loss, because it is
not only an experience of nature but a
source of human wellbeing. For the first
time in history, children are growing up
without being able to recognize the stars.
The starry sky is becoming so rare that
in the 1990s its disappearance gave rise
to an astronomers' movement, which
in turn led to certification programs for
areas with no light pollution. The world's
first international dark sky reserve was
the one surrounding the Mont-Mégantic
Observatory. In parallel with conservation
efforts, a new form of tourism is emerging,
focused on observing the night sky:
astrotourism. Today, such reserves, often
in national parks, are appearing around

the world, complete with observation
festivals and special star-watching
periods. The offer of activities related to
observing the night sky keeps growing,
and can be grouped into three types: static
observation, guided observation and selfguided observation.
Too few places are set up for experiencing
the beauty of a starry sky. Those that are
tend not to provide a multidimensional
experience, instead emphasizing a limited
range of pleasures associated with
contemplating the sky. To fill that void, it
will be necessary to diversify the facilities
designed for viewing the starry sky. That
is the motivation behind my landscape
architecture thesis project.
The chosen site is Parc national du MontMégantic, located 80 kilometres west
of Sherbrooke, near the U.S. border.
Because it is in the centre of the Mont
Mégantic Dark Sky Reserve, it offers
exceptional viewing conditions that are
essentially unique in southern Quebec.
The reserve includes an extensive network
of visitor infrastructure and a variety of
activities related to the popularization of

The activities found along the trail are
based on different types of interactions
with the starry sky. They take the form
of five stations designed to put the visitor
into contact with noteworthy celestial
events and inspire wonderment and awe
through the acquisition of knowledge,
stimulation of the imagination and
individual or group contemplation.
Because the starry sky is only fully
visible to those who give their eyes time
to adjust to darkness, the start of the
walk involves a progressive dimming
of lighting. Like fireflies flittering in the
canopy, red lights mark the path and
help people's eyes adapt. The lights grow
gradually dimmer, disappearing entirely
about ten minutes into the walk. Excited
but alert, visitors enter a completely dark
place, clutching inactive flashlights.
The first type of station gives visitors the
chance to get their celestial bearings.
First, portals are provided to help them
locate Polaris; as the only stationary
star in the sky, for eons it has helped
travellers navigate. These triangular
portals frame a portion of the northern
sky, with the peak of the triangle pointing
to Polaris, like a compass needle. As
more portals are encountered along the
walk, visitors can resituate themselves
in relation to Polaris and other visible
celestial phenomena.
Thanks to these guides, along the path
visitors find a succession of observation
