BUILD CTT
AWARDS
By Christopher Curry

The Associated General Contractors of Connecticut honored excellence in construction management
and specialty trades during the Build CT Awards Dinner in February.
Celebrating the accomplishments of Connecticut's commercial construction industry biennial awards in
construction management, a panel of six judges selected four winners and three merit prize winners from
a field of 13 applicants. There were also two winners in the specialty trades.
The panel of judges representing architects, engineers, private owners, subcontractors, construction
managers and general contractors and public owners selected winners based on eight project-related criteria.
"These projects stand out for their innovation, state-of-the-art advancement, challenging project conditions and general excellence in construction," AGC of Connecticut Chapter President John Mastriano said
at the awards dinner. "AGC members build with pride - the results of their work often enduring for generations - and we are proud to honor their achievements tonight."

LARGE NEW CONSTRUCTION (OVER $30 MILLION)
Yale University Benjamin Franklin & Pauli Murray Colleges

Yale's twin residential colleges, the first built on campus since
1961, are a compelling mix of the modern and the historic.
Innovative building and design techniques blended modern codes,
mechanical systems, material supply chains, energy efficiencies
and construction schedules with a Gothic design.
Materials for the 500,000 square foot complex included windows
from England, granite curbs from China, limestone from Indiana,
brick from New Jersey, wood floors from the West and carved stone
from Canada. The buildings' red brick façade and three towers,
including the soaring 192-foot-tall Edward P. Bass Tower, are features that define the colleges and add to the historic architectural
style of a campus that dates back to 1717.
In the design phase, Robert A. M. Stern Architects moved from a
conventional computer-aided design to a more innovative Building
Information Modeling platform through Autocad's Revit software.
In an innovative move to increase efficiency, the colleges' 45 chimneys and all passageway ceilings were prefabricated and then
shipped to the construction site. Collaboration was key for a project

with 600 tradespeople on site during its peak and a total of 4,000
throughout construction. To that end, the project team included
members of the armed forces, tradesmen, business managers,
engineers, architects and even a psychology major. Each college
houses nearly 500 students and has a dining room, library, common
area and courtyard.
