CONNstruction - Summer 2018 - 11

Hartford Hospital Bone and Joint Institute (Merit Award)
Gilbane Building Company
Gilbane, architects Perkins + Will and HDR, and more than
40 trade vendors and contractors collaborated on New England's
first dedicated orthopedic specialty hospital. The five-story,
150,000 square foot Bone and Joint Institute is a state-of-the-art
building that houses primary and specialty care, diagnostics, rehabilitation, rheumatology, neurology and pain management.
An elevated skybridge designed to look like a ligament connecting bones links the Bone and Joint Institute to the Center for
Musculoskeletal Health, a facility for state-of-the art rehabilitation
and research.
The curved walls and rounded edges of the exterior design and
the skywalk were among the unique design features on which
the architects and construction management team successfully
collaborated.
The specialty hospital includes eight operating rooms and 48 inpatient beds, with room to expand both; a 27-bed post-anesthesia
care unit; a complete imaging center for radiology, MRI and CT
scans; rehabilitation facilities; a motion laboratory study center;
and a center for sports and fitness.

There is also a 75,000 square foot outpatient surgery center and
medical facility.
For the design and construction operating and patient rooms, the
project team solicited and received significant input from the end
users: the doctors, nurses, imaging technicians, IT and biomedical
staff, and other personnel who would provide patient care in the
finished hospital.

NEW MID-SIZE CONSTRUCTION
Ronald McDonald House of Connecticut
Petra Construction Corporation
The 28,000 square foot residential facility is a home away from
home for families who have traveled long distances to get medical
treatment for their seriously ill children at Yale New Haven Children's
Hospital. In many cases, those families may have to stay for weeks
or months under very trying circumstances.
Petra and architects Svigals + Partners created a welcoming,
calming environment for those families through an uplifting colorful façade, playful sculptures and an inviting entrance. In order
to establish a connection between the patient and family experience, the house's entrance and main façade are visible from the
Children's Hospital.
The three-story home has 18 guest bedrooms, with room for
expansion, and an additional two respite rooms for parents seeking
privacy for rest or a conversation.
In its large commercial kitchen families can bond as they cook
side-by-side. There are dining and living room areas, a glassed-in
play room, a teen room, laundry rooms and a sunroom overlooking
the rear courtyard.

Challenges during design and construction included demolition
of six buildings previously on the site. As a nonprofit organization,
the Ronald McDonald House had significant budget constraints. At
one point, those financial limitations required the reduction of the
building footprint. Petra and Svigals + Partners then worked with
a streamlined budget to design and build a home that still met the
the organization's goals and the needs of families.
