CONNstruction - Summer 2018 - 12

LARGE RENOVATION
Orville H. Platt High School Additions and Renovations
O&G Industries
The $112 million, 47-month expansion and renovation of Orville
H. Platt High School essentially rebuilt the entire school. O&G
Industries' project management team was proactively involved
with every aspect of work to ensure that the massive project was
successful, but did not interfere with the school, which remained
open during construction.
"The most significant challenge we faced was that the start of
construction was delayed 14 weeks," O&G Corporate Marketing &
Communications Manager Seth Duke said. "This required accelerating the schedule to ensure the project stayed on track to hit
hard dates such as students returning to school from their summer
break. The project was completed four weeks ahead of schedule
after the initial delay. That's a net result of an 18-week reduction
in the project timeline with minimal overtime costs incurred. This
success was largely due to the implementation of lean schedule
management."
Impressive additions to the school include the new media center, a
30-by-80-foot addition that is entirely cantilevered off the northwest
corner of the school building. Project architect Antinozzi Associates
designed the media center to follow some of the same construction
strategies as bridge building.
Inside the school's main entrance, a floating staircase features
terrazzo treads and glass railings.

The 950-seat auditorium features professional level upgrades
to lighting and sound systems and decorative corrugated metal
wall panels and custom architectural woodwork. The application of the woodwork and panels at numerous angles, curvatures, pitches and intersections required innovative design and
construction techniques.
The project's contributions to the local community included hiring Meriden residents to perform 22 percent, or 90,000 hours, of
the trade work and the establishment of the Platt Builds Program,
which turned the project into a living classroom for students at the
high school interested in the construction field.

Enfield Consolidated High School (Merit)
Gilbane Building Company
This $103 million multi-phased project consolidated two Enfield
High and Enrico Fermi high schools into a single school and
stands as the largest construction project in the history of the
Town of Enfield.
Gilbane led an expansion and renovation project that added a
106,000 square foot addition for science, technology, engineering,
art and math, a 14,000 square foot music addition and expanded
the cafeteria, the kitchen for culinary arts students and the physical
education and health departments. The reconstructed high school
also has a capacity of 1,500 students, 113 classrooms, a school
store, a career center, conference rooms, weight training spaces,
an outdoor patio, auditorium, computer labs and wireless projectors
in the classrooms. The building now has modern, energy efficient
air conditioning, lighting and HVAC systems.
Gilbane, architects Silver/Petrucelli + Associates and the project
team faced and overcame a series of challenges, including the
removal of an abandoned 30,000 gallon underground oil tank that
was not included on contract documents and remediation of the
surrounding soil. The gut renovations of the school's 100,000 square
foot, four-story circa 1950s "A" wing involved a series of structural

challenges and required full PCBs and ACM abatement. The project
team still met a seven-month timetable to finish that phase by an
August 2016 deadline.
In a letter, the chairman of the Enfield High School Building
Committee praised Gilbane project executive Amar Shamas and
the rest of the project team for their "understanding of the school
and project needs" and "personal commitment to the success of
this project." The letter noted that Shamas and the project team
saved the town $4 million through value engineering and overcame
obstacles to meet an aggressive construction schedule.
