marketing video/photography, traffic monitoring and georeferenced imagery. This
is not a complete list as there are many
more areas where UAS technology can be
used. This technology is also being used
in the construction industry to monitor the
progress of building projects (structures,
highways etc.). Since the imagery documents a "time in history," the images can
be used to track the progress of project and
can be used to review past conditions of
the site if any questions arise. The imagery
is also useful to view the entire site, review
where materials are being stored and help
identify any hazardous areas within the
project area.
Now that you have your images from a
UAS, what do you do now? The uses can be
very simple, such as pictures and videos, or
something more complicated. UAS imagery
is often processed to create models that
can use used to create topography and
models of structures (buildings, bridges,
dams, etc.). Using specialize images sensors like a thermal sensor, other information
can be extracted. In the case of thermal
imaging sensors, information from these
sensors can be used to study heat loss
in buildings, used to find gas leaks and
can also be used to inspect solar panels
and detect where there may be defects in
solar panel arrays. Infrared sensors are
also a specialized sensor that is in use.
Infrared sensors are similar to thermal sensor in that they detect heat (a very simple
explanation), and infrared imagery is often
used to monitor vegetative health for crops
and forests. Healthy vegetation will look
different on the images than unhealthy,
distressed vegetation.
The UAS technology is evolving at a
rapid rate and the software that is being
used for high-end processing is constantly improving. This includes software
such as Pix4D, Bentley's ContextCapture,

Agisoft PhotoScan and MeshLab, just to
name a few.

Future
Over the next few years we will see new
systems and uses of these systems. The

imagination of the end users will determine the directions of where this technology
leads. Over time the FAA may change some
of their regulations making the commercial
use of UAS easier or more difficult. Time
will tell.
