job - simplifying time and attendance, and
productivity reports and eliminating the need
to conduct visual checks of work crews.
"In addition to relieving the burden of
some administrative tasks, the device also
provides real-time safety features," says
Peters. A personal alert button on each
device enables a member of the crew who
may be working alone in an isolated part of
the site to let a supervisor know that there's
been an accident or that a potentially hazardous situation has been spotted that

requires attention. "The device also detects
slip, trip or fall events on the job and sends
an automatic alert to designated supervisors," she adds.
One contractor was able to identify the
need for additional safety training when
a two-foot fall was recorded in the same
area, at the same time, for several days.
"There was a worker jumping from the area
in which he was working rather than use
a ladder so the device registered it as a
fall," explains Peters. "Although nine out of

For technology to
be cost efficient
and effective, the
contractor must be
willing to commit
energy and resources
to its adoption.
10 times, this action doesn't result in injury,
the pattern in the data made it possible to
identify a risky behavior that could be corrected and mitigated."
Site positioning systems and automated
machine controls are two technologies that
contractors are adopting at an increasing
rate, says Jeff Dobosz, sales representative at SITECH Metro Northeast. The
use of GPS rovers, robotic total stations
and data collectors enable a construction
company to use its own staff members
to perform construction site layout and
grade checking.
"This saves time because there is no need
to wait for a subcontractor to perform construction layout," he explains. "This means
that if you are working on a large jobsite and
encounter unforeseen circumstances that
prevent continuing work in one area - such
as a materials supply problem - you can
move to another area immediately." Keeping
the construction process moving forward
saves time and money for the contractor
and owner, he adds.
The cost savings can be significant,
explains Dobosz. "Even if a company outsources the model building, the preparation
of a 3-D model of a typical small- to mediumsized site plan usually costs about the same
as one day of layout by a survey crew," he
says. "On a large project the cost savings
can add up very quickly."
Another important technology are
machine controls that allow earthmoving,
milling and paving machinery operators to
"see" the site plan and automatically control for grade, says Dobosz. "When using
machine control, operators know where
they are on the site. With better blade
control and the possibility to safely operate at a higher speed, construction time is
