MHEDA'S 2018 BOARD OF DIRECTORS

on is the recruitment of top talent.  We are fortunate to
have professional salespeople that have been with us
for many years.  They represent our company well and
are invaluable sources of knowledge for our customers. 
Unfortunately, they're not getting any younger!  We need
to find, hire, on-board and train the next generation of
materials handling experts. 
How are you preparing to handle that challenge or
opportunity?
Looking at the typical attendee of a MHEDA event,
you'd probably think that any young person seeing one
of us would immediately think, "Wow, those guys got it
going on and are incredibly hip, I really want to work in
this industry".  Or maybe, "Man these guys are cool, I
wonder how I can become a middle aged, balding white
guy".  Barring the cool part, they see the latter.  We need
to change the status quo and attract people to our companies by creating a culture of excellence.  There are a lot
of MHEDA companies that are leading the charge on this
front and I intend to use the networking opportunities in
our association to make sure we're following their lead.

Trend that will most impact your
business in 2018?
Recruitment and Retention of top talent will most impact
our business in 2018. We have seen (as I am sure most
dealers have) a continued demand for skilled labor. We
have adopted a recruitment strategy that encompasses
various platforms including traditional as well as nontraditional recruiting tools. In addition, we are realizing that
we must be prepared to pay for top talent. This not only
includes wages but other forms of compensation as well.
How are you preparing to handle that challenge or
opportunity?
The growth in the demand for skilled labor has motivated us to look and implement more technology into this
valuable revenue stream. The more productive we can
make our technicians, the less reliance we have on more
bodies. Finally, as our technician base grows, we find
ourselves in need of additional management and leadership as it relates to our service business. Making sure
we have a management structure that ensures accountability and productivity while also being cost effective is
of paramount importance.

Material Handling Business Trend that
will most impact your business in 2018?
It is critical for member companies to
engage in business strategy planning to address all facets of
the organization including exit strategies, disaster planning,
marketability of the company, and adaptability of technological advances.
How are you preparing to handle that challenge or opportunity?
We are spending two days next month with our Management
Team to lay the foundation of Alliance's current five year
strategic plan. We plan to walk away from this meeting with
renewed Core Values, Core Focus, 5 year targets and marketing strategies. We will follow up with this foundation in
September by attending the MHEDA Business Management
Retreat. This will help us develop a new Strategic Plan that
takes into consideration the current technology and business
climate changes in our industry. We attended this retreat in
2006 and it was a game changer for us. We look forward to
the same results in 2018.

that will most impact your business
in 2018?
There are several trends that are impactful to our organization
but one that is most critical and will continue to be addressed
is recruitment and retention of employees.
How are you preparing to handle that challenge or
opportunity?
At Fairchild we've hired a full-time recruiter to take the burden off of our other HR associates who can now focus more
on retaining the talent we have. Recruiting can be difficult in
times with low unemployment, but we recognize there are
underemployed individuals who are less than enamored with
their current organization. To identify those potential employees we work closely with local workforce development offices
and other talent agencies with a special emphasis on those that
place veterans, etc.
We have put even more work into building our own associates from the ground up particularly in the areas of technician
recruitment and professional development of college graduates
