entering the workforce. We work with local technical colleges and high schools who still maintain shop programs
to bring in technicians and build/train them ourselves into
successful forklift technicians. These training costs are
extensive, but it has been well worth the investment. We've
also had success hiring recent college graduates for sales
and aftermarket positions. We're very fortunate that our
organization is in a growth cycle and our associates stay at
Fairchild because they see opportunities for advancement.
We prefer to fill positions from within whenever possible.
Lastly, a strong culture equals low turnover. If they like
the company culture and the people they work for, they're
unlikely to look elsewhere. We've focused very hard on
creating a family culture here. We have fun, celebrate victories together, have contests, etc. And, our associates truly
enjoy how we've given back to the communities we serve.
We work with several charitable organizations in all our
major markets and virtually everyone participates. When
you're proud to work for Fairchild you don't want to leave.

Trend that will most impact your
business in 2018?
The recruiting and retention of
employees is fast becoming an art. Mathand hires for
character, culture fit, education and experience. The experience is typically not in the material handling industry.
Recruiting starts where you look for potential employees. I
have found relying on online job apps ZipRecruiter, Indeed,
Linked In, Craigslist, Monster, and the like, are not enough.
How are you preparing to handle that challenge or
opportunity?
When we have a job opening we brain storm and consider anyone we know personally who may be a fit for
the job. We ask current employees if they know anyone.
I develop relationships with teachers and staff at local
universities and technical colleges for student referrals
prior to graduation. I have my eyes open for potential
candidates when I'm in local businesses that strike me
as an exceptional employee and offer my business card.
With a shortage of workers in all industries, job ads are
abundant so we want our job ads to be noticed and draw
people in, we use employee's words to describe our business, we share our culture, and the advantages of working
for our company. We want potential candidates to choose

that will most impact your business
in 2018?
In 2017, Washington Liftruck's biggest challenge, along
with a continuing industry trend, is the challenge of recruiting and retaining employees while creating a culture that
attracts top talent. This continues to be one of, if not the
biggest, challenge our company faces in 2018. As mentioned
in previous MHEDA Journal articles (2017 Edition, First and
Second Quarters) we are focused on our most critical assets
- our future and current employees.
How are you preparing to handle that challenge or
opportunity?
To retain employees one needs to get and keep the individuals engaged in the business. In today's world, this issue
is critical in maintaining a stable workforce where they are
not only involved, but also enthusiastic about their work.
This enthusiasm leads to them giving their best, exceeding
expectations while being aligned with the company's goals

will most impact your business in 2018?
Picking one of the business trends is
difficult because they are all very relevant in our business in
2018 and beyond. A Material Handling Business Trend that
will impact my business is: #8 The continued demand for
data collection from material handling equipment provides
a revenue stream opportunity. This includes warehouse
control, management systems and telematics
How are you preparing to handle that challenge or
opportunity?
I believe the demand for data both at the dealership and
at the end user's facility will continue to grow and is still in
its infant stage. With new telemetry systems coming online
in 2018 this will continue to be something that we focus on
at our dealership. It will be important for us to educate our
customers as to the value that this data can provide. We
also need to make sure that they are utilizing these systems
and all of the data that they will be collecting. In turn, we
