Adapting To New Trends

F

ull disclosure: I'm writing this
article before the Super Bowl takes
place, so this has the potential
to make me look awfully silly come
February 5th. That being said, I'll take
any good-natured ribbing like a man!
This year's Super Bowl happens to
fall in the same week as the State of
the Union. Both of these combine a
strange mix of reflection on how we
got to where we are and a look ahead
to where we are going.
This year's Convention, I think,
will have the same mix. The theme
of this year's Convention is "What's
Your Vision?" Such a simple question that is anything but simple to
answer. As always, we have an allstar panel of speakers and presenters.
And while their topics are diverse and
wide-ranging, this year, more than in
years past, they are almost all laserfocused on what's next. Where are
we going? The topic titles all reflect
this. "Designing Your Business for the
21st Century," "Economic Forecast:
Winds of Change," "Profiting from the
Profound Demographic Shifts Ahead."
All of these General Sessions will lay
out what is coming and how we need
to adapt to it.
But to know where we're going,
you have to know how we got here.
Anytime we're on the verge of a major
shift, it is important to reflect on what
led us to that point. Those who know
me, or even those who have read this
column for as long as I've been writing
it, know I'm a die-hard Boston sports
fan. As such, I'll be rooting for the
Patriots in the Super Bowl this year
(for the 8th time since 2001.). And,

I know, that if you're not a Patriots
fan, you're rooting for them to lose
because it seems like they're here
every single year (not to mention the
fans, who are smug and arrogant and
obnoxious, which...fair.) But before
the Pats upset the Greatest Show on
Turf and launched the current dynasty,
they were an NFL punchline. They had
been to two Super Bowls in their entire
history, blowouts to arguably the greatest team in history, the '85 Bears, and
a drubbing at the hands of Brett Favre
and the Packers in 1996. Other than
that, from 1971 through 2000, their
record was 208-243. So how did we
get from there to here?
Well, having the best coach and quarterback of all time certainly helped. But
more importantly, the Patriots fundamentally changed the way the game of
football is played. This excerpt is from
an article on The Ringer, titled "The
Near-Perfect Football Team."
Ten years ago, the Patriots perfected the offense that every team
tries to run today. The team was
the "coming-out party for the slot
receiver," said former Giants
center Shaun O'Hara, now an
analyst at the NFL Network. The

becomes, who within
MHEDA will be the people
who adopt the "new way
of thinking" first and,
more importantly, most
successfully?

Patriots' use of Wes Welker in the
slot helped the position become
not only ubiquitous but crucial-and in response, defenses
now typically employ an extra
defensive back. New England
was among the first teams to
deemphasize the fullback, which
would soon become the norm.
That Patriots team was also the
first in NFL history to run shotgun for a majority of its plays;
last year, NFL teams ran 79 percent of their pass plays from the
shotgun. The quarterbacks of the
four conference championship
teams last season were the four
best at throwing to five receivers-another staple the Patriots
are credited with popularizing.
"Their talents allowed everyone
to look at things differently in
the passing game," said current
Patriots receivers coach Chad
O'Shea.
In 2001, when Drew Bledsoe got hurt
and Tom Brady took over, the Patriots
not only launched the most dominant
run in the history of the NFL, but they
changed the look of the modern NFL
offense in a way that the league hadn't
seen since Bill Walsh.
The material handling industry,
indeed the entire global business
model, could be on the verge of a similar paradigm shift. This year's esteemed
group of speakers and panelists seem
to think so. So now the question
becomes, who within MHEDA will be
the people who adopt the "new way
of thinking" first and, more importantly, most successfully?
