Best is the Standard

I

n this issue, we recognize all the
award winners and those that have
reached important milestones in
their business. I want to congratulate all of you who have been recognized by your manufacturers as
being the best in your field. This can
be a tough business and it is no small
feat when one of us is recognized for
our accomplishments.
Every year around this time, we publish this particular theme recognizing
the top dealers in our industry. But
what about those who did not win?
By my rough calculations, there are far
more non-winners in our association
than winners. How do you feel when
one of your peers wins and you don't?
Are you jealous? Angry? Don't care? Do
you beat yourself up and tell yourself
you should just try harder? I have been
a non-winner many times and have felt
all of those things.
Sometimes, I have a tendency to
compare myself with others and
to compare my business with other
businesses. Comparing never serves
me well. When our children were
younger, my wife and I would get these
Christmas letters from our friends and
we would read how "perfect" their
lives were. Their children were on the
honor roll, became eagle scouts, threw
the winning touchdown pass, and got
a 4.0 on their report card. My wife

and I would look at each other and
say "What is wrong with us?" Where
did we go wrong as parents? We were
often tempted to send a fake letter out
that would go something like this "Dear Mary and John: Another year
has passed in the Smith family and it
has been a bit of a struggle. Our oldest
son was expelled from school, our middle son was charged with grand theft
trying to steal a corvette and we just
found out our 17 year old daughter is
pregnant with twins. Merry Christmas!
One of the best lessons I have learned
in life is that my standard should not
be other people. My standard should
not be my neighbor, my co-worker
or my competitor. My standard is to
try and be the best version of myself
that I can. By extension, as a dealer

The most successful teams in today's
sports world have adopted a belief system. It goes something like this- "Don't
focus on the scoreboard or who you're
playing against; focus on the next play.
It is all about the next play." I am not
trying to outperform my biggest competitor- I am my biggest competitor!
As I am writing this article, it is a
Sunday afternoon. Tomorrow, I have
several meetings scheduled with my
staff. For me, doing my best means
being prepared for those meetings. Do
I have a good clear agenda with topics that will help move our company
forward? Can I prepare my attitude and
ensure I am positive and cheerful? How
can I make sure I get a good night's
sleep, so all of the above can happen?
The ironic thing about adopting
"Best is The Standard?," the financial benefits, recognition and awards
will come.
I have been fortunate to have many
good mentors in my life. I was having
lunch with one of them a few years back
and I was complaining that I was not
reaching my goals and I was frustrated.
After unloading on him, he responded
"I have two pieces of advice for you;
Number one - learn to live your life one
day at a time and do your best each
day." After a pause, I said yes, that is
good advice for me. I get caught up in
worrying about the future or regretting
the past and I have little energy left to
perform today. What is the other advice?
He responded "Don't do anything stupid." Wow. Profound.
