more ideas and higher quality ideas
for the improvement of something
relative to the organization.
Reach out to folks in different
departments, different locations,
and different levels of the organization. It may seem easier to develop
relationships with those we have
more in common with, but those
with whom we have less in common
expose us to different information
and experiences.
30 minutes per week is 2 hours per
month, so twice a month you could
have an early breakfast with someone
new, maybe one of those is from the
company and one is someone from
the community. You do not have to
be super extroverted to have a decent
breakfast conversation with someone,
and a couple of breakfast meetings is
not going to be a huge disruption to
your schedule.

Set aside 30 minutes
each week and dedicate
it to maintaining
existing relationships.
It can be especially valuable to
maintain lines of communication
with your acquaintances - the
folks you know but not terribly well.
You know each other by name but
only see each other once every year
or two.

Help an individual or a
team that is stretching,
and chances are that
same kind of support will
be there for you when you
need it.
Try to touch each of the acquaintances in your network once per year
if possible. Fortunately for us, social
technology makes this easier than
ever before. Twitter, Facebook, and
LinkedIn, used intentionally, can be
effective and efficient tools for doing
this, making it easy to send a quick
note on birthdays, work holidays,
and similar events. Some folks do a
great job of writing handwritten notes,
which is more labor-intensive, but also
probably has a greater impact, as we
do not receive a lot of handwritten
notes anymore.
Find something that works for you.
The point is to stay in touch, stay top
of mind for the folks in your network.

Reciprocity seems to be a pretty
strong pull for most human beings;
when someone has done us a solid,

we have a strong urge to repay the
favor. One of the ways to make sure
that your network is looking for an
opportunity to be of value to you is to
be of value to them, early and often.
Look for opportunities to say yes to
people; look for opportunities to help
by sharing your expertise and your
experience. Find ways to be helpful and supportive of people in other
departments. There is nothing wrong
with a bit of interdepartmental rivalry
and competition, but, without some
actual relationships, that can easily
create dysfunctional silos. Help an
individual or a team that is stretching, and chances are that same kind
of support will be there for you when
you need it.
Having greater impact is not just a
matter of what you know. It is also
not just a matter of title or tenure.
One of the most powerful tools at
your disposal, regardless of who you
are, is a large, diverse network of
relationships that can provide you
with access to a unique mix of information, ideas, expertise, support,
and opportunities.

energy can pay off well. Make the
