But for those who are new to social media marketing, getting started can be overwhelming. Let's go back to the basics and first understand why social media is so important. With more than 1 billion people using social media today, consumers are now able to react in real time and converse with companies, allowing businesses to better understand who their customers are. Social media opens the doors for two-way communication where in the past it's always been one sided. Social media posts or pages could quite possibly be the first touch point for a new customer or client. All of the information that is added to these pages now become pieces of digital real estate and should be looked upon like any other branding or awareness building tactic. It is also a fairly inexpensive way to reach large numbers of people quickly. Creating a successful social program requires commitment and a consistent, well thought out, strategic plan.
