The MHEDA Journal - Fourth Quarter, 2016 - 13

FROM THE DESK OF CULTURE LIZ RICHARDS Culture is Not a Cubicle S ometimes I like to live vicariously through my daughter. It's so interesting to watch her as she enters the "working world" and to remember what it was like to be twenty-two years old and ready to take on your first real job and adult life. Katie has been very fortunate to have grown up in this industry where I have worked for 20+ years. She has been exposed to tremendously successful companies and executives along the way. She had great experiences with internships working one summer for the Material Handling Education Foundation doing market research and another with a distributor right here in Chicago. When it came time for Katie to secure a permanent position she was lucky to be recruited right off of LinkedIn by an industrial manufacturer (not associated with MHEDA). We suspect it was because of her major (Professional Selling and Marketing) that this particular company found her. Ultimately she didn't accept the position and here's why. The first round of interviewing took place over the phone and after Katie answered all of the recruiter's questions she asked this, "Tell me about your company culture." After some hesitation the recruiter responded, "Well, we recently got new cubicles." Hmmm...not the response she was expecting. Katie went on through the interview process which was very professionally orchestrated involving a flight out of state, an evening reception and an intense round of interviews the following day. The package they ended up offering Katie was very lucrative but a few things nagged at her. Of course the response to her "culture" question didn't sit well. But there was an underlying sense of rigidity with the company which turned out to be her bigger concern. One of the negatives was the company's unwillingness to budge on the start date which was scheduled immediately after graduation. Before she signed the agreement she told me, "I feel like I am selling my soul." Ultimately, she didn't sign it. What's really interesting is when Katie contacted the three people involved with the interview to let them know she was not accepting their offer, no one ever responded back to her. Maybe her gut check was right on target. Did she turn down the job because of her "Millennial" nature? Perhaps. She did land another position in the tech industry and it is 100% millennial friendly - exercise balls for chairs (if you want), pet friendly work environment, stocked refrigerators, open floor plan, lots of flex time, paid gym membership, great benefits. The pay is 1/3 less than the previous offer. The hours are long and the work is challenging - sales quotas are high. Managers are very young with limited experience. There has been very high turnover among the employee group hired with Katie and overall attrition at the company is dismal. Did Katie make the right choice? Is the fun working environment a good trade-off for a position that may result in burnout? The good news is that Katie is not a quitter and given a task to do, she's going to do it no matter what. Hard work and discipline will pay off in the LIZ RICHARDS CEO MHEDA @MHEDAOffice People are not robots and although flexibility isn't always an option, when it is an option, it should be exercised. Culture does matter. long run and she will have good sales experience moving forward no matter where she goes. As an employer I think there are a couple of lessons here. People are not robots and although flexibility isn't always an option, when it is an option, it should be exercised. Culture does matter. But, even though a fun "millennial-friendly" environment might be all the rage, throwing a bunch of snacks at someone probably won't reduce their stress on the job and result in a long tenured employee. There is a very achievable happy medium and like most things, it boils down to communication and a basic understanding and acknowledgement of needs - the needs of both the employee and the employer. Regardless of the generation! The MHEDA Journal | Fourth Quar ter 2 016 13
