Akron, OH A Here at Fallsway Equipment Company our field representatives have been using laptops (more recently tablet PCs) to capture their notes while in the field. Specifically, they use our CRM system ACT to capture their meeting notes, follow up items, create opportunities to track, set new appointment dates, etc. More recently (this year) we've gone to the mobile application for ACT and our field representatives are now beginning to use their smart phones to accomplish all of the tasks they were performing with their tablets. Also, they regularly use the picture and video capabilities of their smart phones to convey information to our parts and service departments as well as capturing information required for machine quotations. The benefits of not having to carry manila folders/note pads include having an electronic library of notes from previous meetings that are easily accessible. Technology also enables the salesman to be able to enhance presentations through use of videos/other interactive tools available on mobile technologies. What we have found however is that if you want to use technology to take notes, iPhone as an example, it would be best to ask the customer's permission. I have heard circumstances where the customer was not aware that the salesman was taking notes on his mobile technology and perceived the salesman as replying to emails or texting. Once the field notes are taken, an electronic drawing is created back in the office by one of our Engineers or CAD Designers. Unfortunately, we have not found a more efficient way to do this. We have experimented with Laptop's and Tablets and in either case, the process became much slower than what we are doing today. If there are other tools that would allow us to generate a "final product" while in the field, we would certainly be open to try them.
