@WORK Davin Burke Company: XYMotion Title: CEO Years on Job: 1 T he concept of the Forkcrane and the idea for XYMotion came about in 2012 when Steve McLean, an aerospace mechanical engineer and owner of WP Manufacturing and Jim Byrnes, an aerospace engineer who worked with Steve at Ball Aerospace, noticed some inefficiencies in the manufacturing process and set out to devise a way to improve them. And so the idea for the Forkcrane was born. McLean and his team started to build prototypes of the machine but due to historic flooding in Colorado in 2013, XYMotion almost never came to pass. WP Manufacturing suffered extensive damage during the flood and the prototype for the Forkcrane was destroyed. The idea for the product was put on the back burner as WP rebuilt its core business. Nearly three years later, with WP Manufacturing back up and running, McClean turned his attention back to the Forkcrane and in March 2016 re-launched XYMotion. With the prototype finished, XYMotion brought in a local businessman and entrepreneur named Davin Burke to be the CEO of the company. "With the prototype done and some units beginning to sell, it became clear that this was a project that needed some resources devoted to it. So they decided to bring in somebody with a strong business background and acumen to run the business side," says Burke. "They're really smart engineers and they're smart enough to know what they aren't great at. We really balance each other out. They want to invent and I love to talk to people and be out there and learning and networking. It's a great fit." Intrepreneur Ambition Burke describes himself as a "serial entrepreneur." "Everybody that I know that is an entrepreneur is extremely passionate about what they are doing," he says. "It's not a job. I eat, breathe and sleep it. I think that can be said of any entrepreneur. But once you get going in a large organization, that entrepreneurial spirit can get lost in the structure and bureaucracy. And that's where this idea of 'intrepreneuring' comes in." An intrepreneur is a person who behaves like an entrepreneur while being employed and remain able to be creative and think outside the box. And Burke encourages his employees to pursue their inner intrepreneur as well, by finding out what they are passionate about and assigning them large projects based around those passions. "I find out what they're jazzed about and then I give them a project and really let them own it. I help them along the way but it's theirs. And it's something that is going to help the business." Burke's greatest strength is his determination and ambition. "One of my favorite quotes is, 'Intelligence without ambition is a bird without wings.' by Salvador Dali. I think you have to have the ambition but you also have to have the intelligence and drive to make it happen. You have to have a hard backbone and be willing to put in the work. And you have to be a little bit crazy. There's a certain element of risk involved and you have to be able to put it all out there and do whatever it takes to be successful." Change Agent As a serial-entrepreneur, Burke came to XYMotion and the Forkcrane with a lot of experience. However, none of it was in material handling. And though he has had to learn the industry on the fly, it also allows him to have a fresh perspective that somebody who has been in the industry their entire lives might not have. "I'm learning all about mechanical engineering and electrical engineering and material handling and the supply chain. And with that I bring a different perspective and I can come up with some outside of the box ideas." For Forkcrane, the timing is right to enter the market as well, with an industrywide push toward automation and using technology to increase efficiencies. Purple People While attending MODEX, Burke was intoduced to the idea of "purple people." by Dr. Randy Bradley, a Professor of Supply Chain Management at the University of Tennessee. Purple people are half engineer and half businessperson. "They're a unicorn," he says. "But when I do run across one, I always try to find them." As XYMotion continues to grow, the company is always looking for salespeople. But if they can bring a technical understanding to the project, combined with that business acumen, they can get up to speed much faster and be able to hit the ground and running. And as the company has shown over the last year, they don't work at anything but full speed ahead. The MHEDA Journal | Fourth Quar ter 2 016 31
