WOMEN @WORK Kim Prevost Company: eBS Mechdata Title: Director of Business Development Years on Job: 2 "I basically grew up on a lift truck," says eBS Mechdata Director of Business Development Kim Prevost. Kim's father was a material handling engineer and so Kim spent a lot of time in warehouses and around forklifts long before her professional career began. Today, Kim is still involved with material handling, though now on the software side of the business. In her role at eBS, Kim is responsible for managing sales, marketing, customer relations and even project management. It's a job that requires excellent communication skills, up-to-date training, and a lot of traveling. But, as Kim says, "I love this job and I love the company I work for and the industry that we're in. For me, it's more than just a job. It's important because not a lot of women were in the industry when I first came to it in 2004. And when I was a kid running around my dad's warehouses, you never saw a woman. So it's just super cool to be here today and be part of the Women in Industry MHEDA-NET group." Social Media One of Kim's major responsibilities is marketing and programs like Hootsuite have made it much easier to get the message out. "Hootsuite has really alleviated a lot of the time consuming stuff in social media," she says. "Our industry is in kind of a moment in time. There's a lot of succession. And so we have this kind of duality. We have people who have been doing business the same way as they have for the last 60 years. And then we've got the next generation coming in that live, breathe, eat and sleep social media. They don't do anything unless they saw it on social media. So we have to be very diligent about the way we're communicating. I still send hand-written thank you notes and I probably always will. But at the same time, the next generation often doesn't even pick up their mail. So you can't just look at the way we've been doing it for the last 50 years, it's about how are we going to do it in the next 50 years." with another person across multiple planes it changes things." Reading Dolly Parton once said, "If your actions create a legacy that inspires others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, then you are an excellent leader." Kim is on the board of the Women in Industry MHEDA-NET Group and has two mentees. "It's fantastic," she says. "Being able to bounces ideas off of each other and experiences off each other is super beneficial. I was really blessed to be able to have some amazing mentors. And to watch women have that 'ah ha!' moment at a Women in Industry breakfast or a MHEDA-NET conversation is super exciting." So it boils down to what Dolly Parton said. Your mentor should be a person who is doing what you want to do, being what you want to be and is willing to help you become that. Most months, Kim is on the road nearly half of the month. "I'm a huge proponent of reading and because I'm constantly driving or flying, I'd be lost without my iPhone and audio books." Not only is she a voracious reader, but Kim also uses this time to keep current with the ever-changing industry. "I read magazines on my kindle and phone about what is going on in our industry. It's pretty constant." With communication being paramount in her day-to-day work, Kim credits her reading of How to Read a Person Like a Book with greatly improving those skills. "I realized that I was missing so many cues from people because I was only using my ears.
