FENCE PROFESSIONALS FLOCK

et's face it. There's a complexity to the fence industry that many who work outside it don't understand. But
fence professionals know how involved and important their work is. They know that four days of education
and exhibits is a toe dip in industry waters. And coverage on those four days cannot be summarized completely on one page.

But like many homeowner communities these days, AFA's FENCETECH 2018,
held in Phoenix, Arizona, Feb. 6-9, 2018,
was masterfully planned. The association
selected education topics critical to business
success, delivered a top-notch tradeshow
and coordinated activities from sun up to
sun down. In essence, they took a boulder of
industry insight, polished it and delivered a
brilliant gem to AFA members.
Here's a snapshot of why more than
4,300 fence professionals flocked to Phoenix
in February and why you should mark
your calendars for March 13-16, 2019, for
FENCETECH 2019 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

NETWORKING
From cities, states and countries far and
wide, fence professionals had ample opportunity to swap stories, share experiences
and learn from each other. Whether it was
on the show floor, at the Opening Party or
in an education session, AFA members were
open and honest about their line of work and
eager to share their knowledge with others.

EDUCATION
The education sessions were well attended
(most had standing room only) - with fence
contractors eager to learn more about estimating, professionalism, training, marketing, employee handbooks, and much
more. No matter the topic, instructors were

engaging and informative, providing the tips
and tricks contractors needed to know to
win more business, save money, and improve
their bottom line.
An especially fascinating session was the
industry update panel where representatives from all sectors of the industry fielded
questions about the economy, materials,
products, labor concerns, and more. If it
impacted the fence industry, it was a topic
of conversation at this jam-packed session.
Two additional draws to FENCETECH
were the Automated Gate Systems Design
School and the Sales Training School, where
students learned design essentials for automated gate operator systems and effective
consultative selling techniques, respectively.

EXHIBITS
Exhibitors rolled up with new products,
new technologies and lots of expertise - with
the sole intent of arming contractors with
the necessary tools to keep their customers
safe, keep businesses secure and animals free
from harm. With so many industry veterans
in one place, you'd expect there would be an
unspoken competitive spirit - a "my product's better than your product" attitude. But
that's not what FENCETECH is about. It's
about the good of the industry - an industry
that remains vital to our nation's economy.
And, sprinkled between handshakes,
business deals and meetings were plenty

of fun activities. AFAEF's dunk tank was
a big draw, giving folks the opportunity to
dunk Tony Thornton, AFA's executive director, and others. Other booths had games,
refreshments, and giveaways.

RECOGNITION
A great association like AFA is made up
of great people. FENCETECH is the perfect
opportunity to recognize those who go above
and beyond their regular duties to better the
association and the industry. AFA honored
the following individuals: Lyle Buchanan,
Buchanan Access Systems (Distinguished
Service Award), Sal Militello, Wayside
Fence Company (Ambassador Award), Paul
Harrison, Eagle Fence Distributing, LLC
(Hall of Fame award), and Joseph Miller,
CFP Miller Fence Company (Hall of Fame
award), in addition to giving a grateful nod to
the Gulf South Chapter, which won Chapter
Project of the Year for its philanthropic work
on the Petal First Baptist Church. In addition, scholarships were awarded to seven
student recipients: Jennifer Ulloa, Katherine
Loftus, Jordyn Jefcoat, Malia Caruso, Kaitlyn
Enticknap, Ryan Sudol and Zenya Yanoff.
An event like this is simply not possible
without the generous support of sponsors
(see page 56 for the complete list), top-notch
leadership and stand-out members. To see
it all in action in a four-day span is quite
impressive. ■
