TOP HONORS
AT FENCETECH
1967, serving as one of the largest dealers for
Anchor Fence's shoe and anchor chain link
fence systems in the country, says Kimberly
Miller, president-elect of Miller Fence Co.,
who nominated her father for this award.
"If you asked him about it, he always says,
'If you cut me, I'd bleed Woodland Green,'"
she jokes.
On Dec. 31, Miller officially retired from
his top post of his company - but not entirely
from the fence industry, Kimberly says.
"It hasn't been easy for him letting go of
his baby, Miller Fence Co.," she says. "He
will still be attending AFA events for many
more years to come."
Her father has been extremely active in
the association, attending FENCETECH for
many years and participating in many AFA
events. From 1997 to 2000, Joseph Miller
served as president of AFA's Northeast
Chapter, as well as on the Board of Governors
for the national association.
In 1998, Miller Fence was awarded the
American Fence Association Chapter
Project of the Year Award.
"I'm totally honored - and shocked - that
I was nominated and selected, and I still
can't believe it," Miller says.
This is his 51st year being in the fence
industry - Miller's father in 1967 put him
and his brother to work part-time, and when
the two siblings went away to college, they
still came back in the summers to put up
fences. Miller then went into the Navy, but
later came back home and put up fences.
After the Navy, he went to work for a
bank, putting up fences on the weekend.

But then he realized he was making more
money on the weekend than working at
the bank, so he quit and started putting up
fences full time.
"I think the fence industry is a good trade
for young people," Miller adds. "They can
make a good living at it and meet some great
people at fence conventions, as well as attend
great seminars."
Miller annually donates to local animal
shelters, Mass Audubon, and the Regional
Environmental Council's YouthGrow, an
urban agriculture-focused youth development and employment program for lowincome teens.
Paul Harrison, IE CFP, CAGOI, CAGSD,
Blue Ribbon Company, has dedicated 44
years of service to the fence industry, says
Jason Gardiner, who has worked with
Harrison at sister companies for nearly a
decade and was the one who nominated him
for the award.
"Paul has enjoyed a long relationship with
the AFA and has attended 44 tradeshows,"
Gardiner says. "Through the years, he has
participated in numerous AFA chapters.
He has met many great people through his
involvement and feels very fortunate to do
what he gets to do."
In 1974, Harrison started in the industry
as a field services manager with Hackney
Corp., which became part of Merchants
Metals. After serving there for nearly a
decade to become responsible for a multistate region, Harrison went to work for
Vanguard in Birmingham, followed by
Southeastern Wire.

Later Harrison went into the installation business with one of his customers,
but eventually went back to work with
Merchants Metals as the Northeast regional
sales manager, a position he held for one
year. Harrison was promoted to president
of the company and held that position for
six years.
He left Merchants Metals to start Eagle
Distributing Co. in Birmingham, now one
of the fastest-growing wholesale distributors
of fencing products in the United States,
Gardiner says. The company later opened
locations in Chicago and Houston, and soon
will be opening a branch in St. Louis.
"I've been in the business 44 years, and
I've made a lot of great friendships in the
fence business - from fellow employees, my
customers and from competitor vendors,"
Harrison says. "I feel like I've gained a lot
of respect throughout the industry, and I
was proud to receive the AFA Hall of Fame
award because I'm with a very special honored group."
Harrison adds that in all of his job functions, he has tried to create opportunities
for other people to advance themselves, both
personally and professionally.
"I've always said that I work with people,
and that people don't work for me - they
work for themselves," he says.

2017 DISTINGUISHED
SERVICE AWARD
